In a major tactical change in tackling incidents of rioting, the Sindh Police Department has been equipped with an anti-riot water canon vehicle.

The Provincial Police Officer Sindh Babar Khattak on Friday afternoon inspected the vehicle at the Central Police Office Karachi.

The anti-riot water cannon vehicle has a water tank capacity of 10,000 litres and can also be used for tear gassing. Another feature of the vehicle is that it can shoot coloured water at rioters, who can then be identified by police in a subsequent crackdown. The vehicle has two guns fitted on the top and one gun each on all four sides for emergency situations. The canon spurts out water at a rate of 1,400 feet per second, and can be used from a distance of up to 65 feet. Such vehicles are also used in developed countries to control demonstrators engaged in riots, violent situations and anti-social acts
