ISLAMABAD: The first ever heart transplant in Pakistan will be carried out in Rawalpindi Institute for Cardiology (RIC) next year. It would be performed by Diana fame worlds renowned cardiologist FRCS surgeon Dr Hasnat Ahmad Khan.
It was revealed by Dr Hasnat Khan in his maiden media interaction in Rawalpindi on Friday. The chief executive and professor of cardiology Dr General Azhar Kayani and teams of doctors were also present.
Dr Kayani briefed the media about the facilities made available for the purpose. He revealed that gynecology centre is being set up in the RIC to undertake research for the cause of death in maternity due to the cardiac diseases which is not known in this part of the world.
Dr Hasnat Ahmad Khan who is a distant cousin of Imran Khan and currently consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at Basil-don University Hospital Essex in east of England, announced to wind-up from England and shift to Pakistan for the ailing humanity. He is heart and lungs surgeon and in the meanwhile imparting training to nurses and doctors who will subsequently become state of art experts in their respective departments.
Jhelum (Punjab) born Dr Hasnat Ahmad Khan who greatly contributes in charity said that he wanted to come back to his country and people for the reason he has decided to come to Pakistan and serve his own people.
Dr Hasnat Ahmad Khan has developed new system for heart surgery where the by-pass operation is carried out without tearing apart the chest of the patient. Dr Hasnat penetrates through ribs for the by-pass surgery. The method has proved to be successful but it is being followed by him exclusively.
Dr Khan has performed sixty operations in RIC during recent months in the RIC whenever he came to visit his family and they provided 100 percent success rate. Dr Hasnat Khan said that media should voluntarily launch awareness campaign for the prevention of cardiac diseases. General Kayani said that worlds 80 percent of heart patients are found in South Asia since genetically the heart vessels and arteries are comparatively narrow in the people of this region. The only way to deal with it is to less eat and more exercise or walking. He told the newsmen that RIC has developed stainless steel stent with the active cooperation of NESCAM that would cost Rs15000 while the stent available in same quality cost is ten times of the same. Cheaper balloon and equipment for carrying out angioplasty and angiography are also being developed with the assistance of NUST. The purpose is to ensure supply of the domestically manufactured instruments in case of any external emergency, the general added.
Dr Hasnat Ahmad Khan announced that he would visit to Abdul Razzaq Welfare Trust Hospital in Badlot in the suburbs of Jhelum for free of cast operations next month. Dr Hasnat appreciated the facilities available in the RIC and said that Pakistan needs some more cardiac institutes like this in backward area. He eulogized efforts of Punjab government for provision of facilities for the ailing humanity. To a question Dr Hasnat Khan said that Lady Diana was not his patient but she used to patronize the charity work for the needy patients.
