BlackBerry Messenger users can tap into a potpourri of new features when the app is updated on Thursday.

Slated to reach iOS and Android users, version 2.0 of BBM will bring with it BBM Voice, a way to call your BBM contacts. Already available for BlackBerry OS, BBM Voice gives you the ability to make free phone calls to other BBM users via your Wi-Fi or data connection.

Another new feature on the list is BBM Channels, a chat discussion forum devoted to a variety of topics. Find a channel that interests you, and you can join in on conversations with other BBM users.

The update also offers new features to BlackBerry 10 users as well as those on iOS and Android.

BBM Groups helps you share pictures, lists, and appointments with people in a specific group, such as friends or family members. This feature is already available, but the new version of BBM will let you create larger groups with as many as 50 people.

BBM will come with Dropbox built in, so you can send a file directly from your Dropbox account to a fellow BBM user. Receive a file on your end, and you can add it to your Dropbox storage as well. You'll also be able to quickly share new photos, voice notes, calendar events, and other items with people during a chat session.

Finally, BBM users keen to share their location during a chat can use a new feature provided by Glympse. You set a timer to share your current whereabouts with a fellow BBM user for anywhere up to four hours. When the timer runs out, your location becomes private again.

"BBM continues to grow in popularity and we are focused on providing our users the best, most full-featured mobile messaging and sharing experience in the market," Sean Hungerford, BlackBerry's director of BBM Product Management, said in a statement. "Our partnership with Glympse will help us take the BBM experience a step further by adding live location sharing and making the experiences our users share on BBM more dynamic than ever."

The new version of BBM will offer all the new features to BlackBerry 10 users. Those running BlackBerry OS5 and above will also get an update but one without the Dropbox integration and location sharing. BlackBerry didn't give a specific ETA for the update, saying it would roll out later in the day on Thursday.

[h=1]Using BBM 2.0 on iOS[/h]
By DJ Reyes on 14 Feb 2014 10:32 am

BBM for iOS (as well as for Android and BlackBerry) has just seen an update. The biggest changes come to the the iOS and Android versions. In BBM 2.0 we see the addition of BBM Channels, BBM Voice, location sharing and more. With a big change means some things have switched around so we’ll take a closer look at BBM 2.0 on iOS.

When you jump into BBM you’ll find that the Contacts shortcut along the bottom is now replaced by Updates, so you can quickly see your contacts status updates and comment on them. You can filter these updates by All, Contacts or Channels. To access your contacts list use the tab menu on the left.
As mentioned one of the bigger additions to BBM 2.0 is BBM Channels. A micro-blogging type service where users can create a channel on their favorite topics, engaging in conversation with their subscribers. It has been available for BlackBerry users since November 2013 (in beta since May 2013) and it has plenty of well established Channels for you to discover. You can learn more and see how to follow Team CrackBerry in the BBM Channels section.
Another big addition to BBM 2.0 is BBM Voice. Allowing you to make VOIP calls over Wi-Fi and cellular, if permitted. To use BBM Voice, just jump into a chat conversation and you should find an icon in the top right corner - a speech bubble with a telephone in it. If this is green, then the contact is available for a BBM Voice call. It will be grayed out if they are not available. The quality of BBM Voice calls is awesome I highly recommend it to make calls to friends and family abroad.

Other new additions include new emoticons. Bringing you 100+ more ways to express yourself via BBM. You’ll also find the paperclip attachment icon has moved too. It’s now to the left of the text field for easier access. When you tap it you will also find some new options too. The option selected by default when you tap the paperclip icon is voice note. Pretty much Push-to-talk. Just tap and hold the microphone icon, speak, then let go to send the voice note. There’s camera icon for you to be able to quick snap a picture to send to your contact. And also a flower icon (the last icon) with a plus sign that gives you more attachment options. You can select a photo from your gallery (flower icon), send a calendar entry (date icon), send contact details, (person icon), send your location (map pin icon) and share a Dropbox file (Dropbox icon).

While you can send your location using the option described above, you’ll also find a ‘G’ icon in the main attachment selection area. This is a better way to share your location and it is powered by Glympse. When you tap the Glympse icon, it will use GPS to find your location and then you can send that information to a contact for a specified amount of time. From 5 minutes to 4 hours. The receiver has the option to view the map of your location for the stated amount of time, once the time has elapsed, the option to view disappears telling them it has expired.
BBM 2.0 is a nice big update on iOS and if you haven't got it yet. It's definitely time to try it out.

[h=1]Using BBM Voice on iOS[/h]With the recent roll out of BBM 2.0, the additional feature of BBM Voice for our friends on iOS brings us all a step closer together. It's been great having the ability to send messages over BlackBerry Messenger with our iPhone buddies but now we can call them too - without leaving BBM.

BBM voice works over data, so you can call any of your BBM contacts, anywhere around the world for free. This works on both 3G/4G as well as Wi-Fi so you shouldn't have any restrictions when it comes to making that important call.
Getting to grips with using BBM Voice on iOS is as simple as peas - just follow these steps:

  • With a BBM contact selected for chat you should see a green phone logo at the top right of the display if they are online and available for a BBM Voice call.
  • Tap the green tab phone icon.
  • The call will be initiated and even while talking you'll still be able to send messages/pictures etc.
You'll notice three in-call tabs on the display for speaker phone, muting and ending the call. These can be hidden if you desire by pressing the upwards arrow tab at the top right of the screen.
There you have it, a pretty sweet upgrade for team iOS. If you're a BlackBerry user with iPhone friends be sure to send them this link so they can start enjoying the benefits of BBM Voice.

BlackBerry BBM takes voice calls to iPhone, Android as Viber ends up in Japanese hands

BlackBerry made life a lot simpler, and cheaper, for lovers. The altest version of its popular BlackBerry Messenger will now let even Android and iPhone users make free voice calls to BBM contacts. It will be free if you are using it over Wi-Fi, but while it works over data connections too, overuse of this feature could lead to you exceeding your data limit sooner than you expected. So, the free comes with a catch.

BBM customers will also be able to share their live location for a specified amount of time with other BBM contacts by using location sharing, powered by Glympse, and will have 100 new emoticons available to help them say whats on their mind. That would be handy if you still have a lot of friends on BBM, those who have not yet switched over to Whatsapp, Line or WeChat.

Actually, a lot of people are using multiple messaging services to keep in touch with different kinds of people. For instance, you can use BBM for office contacts, Line for family and WeChat for friends and so on. A lot of users do this segmentation to get a grip on their increasingly social lives.
The messaging segment saw another interesting news on the same day. Viber, the pioneer for voice over data services on smartphones, was picked up by Japans ecommerce company Rakuten.
