I generally agree with you but there was another factor. It was India that had offered to help Nato from 'a northern corridor and air bases'. That was the prime danger for an immediate decision than the Nato per se --
However, imo Musharraf had better taken the bet (as Indian could hardly pull it through) and taken some short-term losses however, in the long-run India policy and empty threats were doomed.
It was Musharaf who indicated that NATO will choose India if we refuse to offer a help. India was not Afghanistan's neighbor plus they cannot provide help to NATO the way Pakistan did. It is disappointment that an army chief was giving a statement that if we have not helped NATO then US will throw us in stone ages. US & India cannot go any worse on Pakistan than what they are last few years. If a democratic government were there then they would have handled situation much better way in accordance with the best interest of the country. Thanks for good discussion.

If i recall it right, there was statement from Indian side, (from their PM) in this regard, at least in the pak press. It was not just musharraf. In any case Musharraf had to take such empty threats with courage.
Whatever was the impulse for the immediate decision (and i hope it was not just a telephone call but more than what is been on the surface) that is all academic now. However the way he conducted the war situation in the following years was, to say the least, criminal and cowardice. It was hardly a 'Pakistan First''policy than for a Nato and self interest first policy. Ultimate the death toll of 70,000 pak citizens and soldier lies on his shoulder and he should accept his mistakes. The later generals inherited a mess which was out of control and I assumed they were to handle the situation the best they could to get out of quagmire that Musharraf had put the nation in.

It would be a speculation to guess how a democratic setup would had handled the situation (though i may only assume that it would have been some better).

Nawaz and pmln were not in the picture to point any fingers on them for the war but the role of Benazir and about the whole of the so-called liberal and democratic media and opinion makers was no less disastrous than Musharraf. For example, dawn editorial pages were pushing for the same policy fron day one and for 'do more' all those years. Dawn claimed for having proofs for osama's direct involvement ( which even us has not shown yet) and tainted pak army for 911 from the day one. Then Benazir who was out of politics due to swiss verdict but she got a new life from 911 and toured all across claiming that she would be more beneficial for the west and propagated theories that Musharraf and army was cheating them. She called for even more drone attacks. ANP, baluchi sardars and mqm were no good either- they were in bed with musharraf and more so with the west and benefited from war funds. the role of much of 'democraticl' media is well known.
Besides Musharraf, the politicians and fake liberals who were thick deep with Musharraf's policies and had financially benefited from the war cannot be absolved either.
So actual situation regarding the democratic forces (except pmln) is not so rosy either. How BB or PPP had actually handled the situation, we may not know because of her death but if we may get clue from zardari, as he acted no less disastrous than musharraf and fanned the flames of war. Only PPP (only nwfp chapter), pmln (punjab), IK and a few islamic parties vocally opposed his policies in those initial years.
