salam All,

Measles is shaping up as an epidemic as per some news. Most imp thing and fact is ... its completely preventable with the help of vaccines which is widely available in all major cities with a name called MMR ( Measles , Mumps and Rubella ) vaccine. Age of vaccine is around 9-12 months.

So please get your kids vaccinated and also help other community brothers and sisters kids vaccinated if they cant afford the vaccine. I am not aware of the exact amount- sorry about that. It will be a great sadaqa in shaa Allah if we help others too.

[h=1]Overview of Measles Disease[/h]Cause
Measles is a respiratory disease caused by a virus. The disease of measles and the virus that causes it share the same name. The disease is also called rubeola. Measles virus normally grows in the cells that line the back of the throat and lungs.
[h=2]Symptoms[/h] Measles causes fever, runny nose, cough and a rash all over the body. Visit the Signs and Symptoms page for more information, and the Photos of Measles page to see pictures of people with the measles rash.
[h=2]Complications[/h] About one out of 10 children with measles also gets an ear infection, and up to one out of 20 gets pneumonia. About one out of 1,000 gets encephalitis, and one or two out of 1,000 die. Other rash-causing diseases often confused with measles include roseola (roseola infantum) and rubella (German measles).
While measles is almost gone from the United States, it still kills nearly 200,000 people each year around the world. Measles can also make a pregnant woman have a miscarriage or give birth prematurely. For more information, visit the Complications page.
[h=2]Transmission[/h] Measles spreads through the air by breathing, coughing or sneezing. It is so contagious that any child who is exposed to it and is not immune will probably get the disease. See the Transmission page for more information.
[h=2]Measles Incidence[/h] Measles is very rare in countries and regions of the world that are able to keep vaccination coverage high. In North and South America, Finland, and some other areas, endemic measles transmission is considered to have been interrupted through vaccination. There are still sporadic cases of measles in the United States because visitors from other countries or US citizens traveling abroad can become infected before or during travel and spread the infection to unvaccinated or unprotected persons.
Worldwide, there are estimated to be 20 million cases and 164,000 deaths each year. More than half of the deaths occur in India. For more information on measles in the United States and worldwide, visit the Global Elimination page.
[h=2]Measles History[/h] One of the earliest written descriptions of measles as a disease was provided by an Arab physician in the 9th century who described differences between measles and smallpox in his medical notes.
A Scottish physician, Francis Home, demonstrated in 1757 that measles was caused by an infectious agent present in the blood of patients. In 1954 the virus that causes measles was isolated in Boston, Massachusetts, by John F. Enders and Thomas C. Peebles. Before measles vaccine, nearly all children got measles by the time they were 15 years of age. Each year in the United States about 450-500 people died because of measles, 48,000 were hospitalized, 7,000 had seizures, and about 1,000 suffered permanent brain damage or deafness. Today there are only about 50 cases a year reported in the United States, and most of these originate outside the country.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani health officials Monday called for infants leaving the country to be issued polio vaccinations at airports after virus samples linked to a southern Pakistani city were discovered in Egypt.
Two sewage samples from Cairo were analysed and found to resemble a recently discovered strain in Sukkur, a joint statement by health officials, the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF said.
“To reduce the possibility of spread of the polio virus beyond Pakistan’s borders, the government’s Monitoring and Coordination Cell is advising to set up permanent vaccination counters at the international departure lounges of all airports,” it said.
The statement recommended that “all children under five years leaving the country are vaccinated against the polio virus.”
Though Egypt has been polio-free since 2004, authorities there have ordered the immediate vaccination of all children under five years of age in the areas where the samples were found.
Polio cases in Pakistan have risen sharply in recent years, hitting 198 in 2011 — the highest figure for more than a decade and the most of any country in the world, according to the WHO.
Unicef’s acting chief of polio unit Michael Coleman said the incident highlighted the importance of vaccination in Pakistan.
“It reinforces the urgent need of all caregivers across Pakistan to vaccinate children under five years of age against polio through the nearest health facility or through campaign vaccination teams,” he said.
The prime minister’s advisor on polio eradication Shahnaz Wazir Ali termed the case “a stark reminder of the risks associated with active polio virus transmission in the country.
Pakistan is one of only three countries where the highly infectious crippling disease remains endemic, along with Afghanistan and Nigeria.
Earlier this month Pakistan provided paramilitary and police support to polio vaccination teams in the northwest after a series of attacks on medical workers.
UN agencies suspended work on a nationwide campaign to inoculate children against the highly infectious disease after nine health workers were murdered in a string of attacks in the northwest and Karachi in December last year.
Rumours about the vaccine being a plot to sterilise Muslims have long dogged efforts to tackle the disease in Pakistan.

Amish
