A sessions court has directed the Sindh Home Minister to confirm about the posting of a former DIG, who is a co-accused in a case related to torturing Asif Ali Zardari in the year 1999, as to whether or not he is still serving in any government department.
This direction was issued by the Additional District and Sessions Judge Abdul Razzak after Zardaris counsel Ashiq Solangi stated that ex-DIG Farooq Ameen, who has been declared proclaimed offender, was seen in the city but the police personnel were reluctant to arrest him.
He also submitted in the court that he (ex-DIG) has also filed an application in the SHC and was seen during several hearings.
Expressing astonishment, the judge issued directive to the provincial home minister to clarify the position of the co-accused Farooq Ameen by June 3. He also ordered the investigation officer to arrest the ex-DIG and produce him before the court on the next date of hearing.
Zardaris counsel further submitted that Chief Secretary Punjab was also issued notice in the last hearing to furnish details about the former IG Sindh Rana Maqbool, another accused, regarding his posting at an important post.
He prayed the court that since the Chief Secretary Punjab failed to submit report so he may be issued show cause notice. The judge issued last warning to CS Punjab to submit report regarding the whereabouts of former IG Sindh on June 3.
Meanwhile, counsel for Najaf Mirza, another accused in the case, moved an application, praying the court to condone his client from personal appearance as he had left for Lahore for training.
The judge questioned under whose directives he left the city. However, he accepted the application subject to producing the notification in this regard.
Besides Najaf Mirza, former chairman of defunct Ehtesab Bureau Saifur Rehman Khan, his brother Mujibur Rehman Khan, former Sindh Police chief Rana Maqbool and former DIG Farooq Amin Qureshi have been facing charges of unlawfully obtaining Asif Zardaris physical custody from an Anti Terrorism Court on the night between May 15 and May 16, 1999, taking him to the CIA Centre and torturing him to extract incriminatory statements. Asif Zardaris tongue was slashed and he bled profusely, but the police covered up incident as an attempt to commit suicide by the complainant.
