Aslam-o-Aliekum!

I sincerely hope that everyone of you will be in good health. Today - July 28: Humanity is celebrating World Hepatitis Day. The primary reason behind celebrating the day is to spread awareness world wide so that one can prevent and make himself/herself diagnosed from the disease.

Ratio of Hepatitis disease is quite high world wide and as well as high in Pakistan. In Pakistan, an estimated population of 13 million hepatitis patients are there (with 7% in Sindh) and alarmingly many of whom are unaware of the fact that they are carriers of the deadly virus. The deadly fact about Hepatitis B and C is that both the strains are silent hunters which could infect people for many years without clear manifestation or symptoms. Ultimately the liver begins to fail and collapses completely with Vomiting Blood and immediate death.

"Unsafe blood, unsafe injections, and sharing drug-injection equipment can all result in hepatitis infection"

However, effective medicines are now in place to treat both the strains of Hepatitis B and C. My mother was diagnosed Hepatitis C back in December 2013 and due to exceeded age limit she was refrained from using INTERFERON treatment because of immense side effects. However recently we have started her treatment using the magical oral drug named as SOVALDI. ALHAMDULILLAH she is recovering and is moving along a 6 month course that will eventually result in complete elimination of virus.

In Pakistan the ratio of Hepatitis C sufferers is alarmingly high with every 1 person infected in 15. But please don't get panic because it is curable. If any of your elder/family member/closed one or you yourself feel doubted that you might have the virus, please don't hesitate to get a simple blood test from any of the local lab. Just go to them and request a blood test of HbsAg (For Hepatitis B) and Anti-HCV (For Hepatitis C).

If the virus is detected then don't waste time and initiate the treatment process because once liver enters cirrhosis phase - the last stage, it becomes difficult to deal the case effectively and achieve successful outcome.
