Butt hopeful IPL will open doors to Pak players
NEW DELHI: Fans may finally get to see Pakistani cricketers display their wares in theIndian Premier League. Former PakistanCricket Board (PCB) chief Ijaz Butt was quoted as saying that BCCI's top officials have assured him that Pakistani cricketers would take part in the next edition of the IPL.
Butt reportedly met IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla and ICC president Sharad Pawar in this regard a few days ago. As a gesture, BCCI also invited PCB chief Zaka Ashraf for the IPL final between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday. "With the consent of the incumbent PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf, I meet Shukla and Pawar, and discussed the progress on Indo-Pak cricket," Butt said.
Officially, the BCCI is in no hurry to declare anything. For starters, the board has already announced the arrival of Sialkot Stallions from Pakistan to take part in the Champions League, which is scheduled to be played later this year in India. This is the first time Pakistan cricketers will be welcomed to play cricket in India after ties between the two countries soured following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
In 2010, the ICC had advised the BCCI not to involve Pakistani players in the IPL and so they were not considered for the 2011 auction. Even in 2012, none of the Pakistani cricketers were in the auction list.
