Sartaj Aziz, Advisor to the Pakistan Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs
Advisor to the Pakistan Prime Minister on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz on Saturday regretted the meeting of Pakistan High Commissioner with the Hurriyat leaders in New Delhi ahead of India-Pak Secretary level talks last month.
In an exclusive interaction with Headlines Today on the sidelines of UNGA meeting, Aziz said the meeting with Kashmiri extremist leaders was ill-timed.
"The timing of the meeting between Pakistan High Commissioner to India and the Hurriyat leaders was not right and it could have been avoided. The newly-elected leaders of both the countries missed an opportunity of starting a dialogue."
However, he insisted that Pakistan can't ignore Hurriyat.
"The talks should not have been cancelled as the issue was not that big. Kashmiri leaders have been meeting us as the Kashmir is one of the issues, which are to be discussed. Dialogues with Hurriyat leaders has been a regular practise since last 20-30 years."
He further added that, "We are upset after India cancelled the talks. Talks are the only way forward for us. Now, the ball is in India's court to come up with a date."
Praises Modi's for his UNGA speech
Aziz praised Modi for his 'positive' speech at UN General Assembly.
"What I find very positive is Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech at UNGA in which he said I want to improve relations with our neighbours including Pakistan," said Aziz.

if India is really serious in dialog then it was no the big issue to cancel the process, India could have register strong protest but straight away cancellation of process is also questionable.. NS represented the voice of ppl of Pakistan.. and for us Kashmir is an issue.. for you it could be speech of Jalsa.. bcoz you have ur own perspective which is totally biased, for us it was good bcoz we knows the situation of our country

ya sartaj aziz is defending it by saying (whatever i have quoted).. i think it is a diplomatic norm at higher level not to bash anyone straightaway .. so he accepted that the meeting could have been avoided but bcoz Kashmirs are also equal stakeholder so at any point (whenever India and Pakistan will go into any discussions or decisions about Kashmir) of time we have to consult with them.. and i think if you simplify his statement.. that is what he was trying to tell diplomatically.

Pakistan's admission on 'poor timing' of Hurriyat meeting may pave way for resumption of talks
NEW DELHI: Pakistan's public admission that its envoy's talks with Hurriyat leaders reflected "poor timing" may open the way for resumption of official dialogue with India.

Sartaj Aziz, foreign policy advisor to Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif, told an Indian news channel, "The timing of the meeting between Pakistan high commissioner to India and the Hurriyat leaders was not right and it could have been avoided. The newly-elected leaders of both the countries missed an opportunity of starting a dialogue."

The Narendra Modi government called off foreign secretary-level talks with Pakistan in August after their envoy in Delhi, Abdul Basit, met Hurriyat leaders on the eve of the dialogue, and persisted with the meeting even after foreign secretary Sujata Singh warned him that it would not be good for ties.
