by the beginning of 19th century mughals were finished by marathas , mughal king was king of delhi under guardianship of maratha sardars scindia and holkar , whole of punjab was under sikh misaldars , bangal bihar orissa rajsthan and south india gave tax to maratha sardars . you can understand muslims were saved by entry of english east india company only . this is why muslims in punjab were first to join english army .here in punjab english pattern of govt under john lorence was introduced first time in india .
muslims were saved from ranjit singh by english only .

what i wanted to say is

entry of english in indian subcontinent was a blessing in disguise , although they came as imperialists ,but they provided some system in our society .they provided modern institutions, education, revenue,local bodies, hospitals, transport, taxation, law and order, courts.police, customs railway .
we did not have any system in our prior rulers raza ,nawabs ,zamindars or badshah .
otherwise our country was in dark ages as we call andher nagri under hindu and muslim rulers of that era. .
