India's missing women

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Certain regions have less than 800 girls born for every 1,000 boys
  • Parents circumvent rarely enforced laws like ban on sex-selected abortion and dowries
  • Villages lack enough women for men to marry because of sex imbalance

(CNN)
-- The New Delhi rape case left the whole world wondering why India is treating its women so badly. In fact, discrimination against women already starts in the womb: India has some of the most distorted sex-ratios in the world. There are regions where fewer than 800 girls are born for every 1,000 boys. For many reasons Indian culture prefers sons. An expensive bride-price, or dowry, is only one of them.

So day-by-day, thousands of parents circumvent rarely enforced laws and have their baby daughters aborted after an ultrasound scan has revealed the sex of the fetus. It is estimated that India has been losing up to 12 million baby girls over the last three decades.

I wanted to find out what it means for a society if such a significant number of women are missing.
In one village just two hours drive outside Delhi, I met Narinder, a schoolteacher, and his family. He had three brothers and only one of them got married. There weren't enough brides, because the village has been aborting their daughters for decades.

Narinder told me that he had already reached out to an agent who would find him a bride from afar. In fact, he planned to share this bride with his brothers.

I felt sorry for Narinder, because he totally understood that his misery was due to the fact that his village has been actively selecting for sons. Still, in a quiet moment, he confided to me, that if his purchased wife would be pregnant, he'd make sure it was a son. I was perplexed. Everyone in this village knew it was wrong to prefer sons over girls, everyone experienced the problems firsthand.

And still, like sleepwalkers, they continued their way, because culture dictates that sons are a blessing and daughters a curse.
After the Delhi rape case, the whole world looked at India in disbelief, its urban middle class took to the streets. I returned to India to meet Shafiq Khan, a former Maoist rebel, who realized that violence is not the way forward. Shafiq now uses his wit and bravery to make inroads into rural India's patriarchal societies.

Shafiq Khan's organization
We hit the dusty streets, down to Haryana where Shafiq introduced me to women who do not have a voice, women for whom nobody demonstrates. They are abused and raped and sold like cattle and nobody cares. They are called Paro, or strangers. They are the sort of women Narinder will buy -- those who make up for the scores who are never born.

Akhleema and Tasleema, two sisters from Kolkata, were born into a poor family, before her aunt sold them via an agent to two brothers in Haryana, who could not find a bride. Within weeks, Akhleema was beaten so hard by her husband, that she lost hearing in her left ear. Both spend their time cooking, cleaning and tending the fields. They have no rights, no voice and, most shockingly: there is no way back. They have children with their men and it is culturally unacceptable to leave them behind.

But where are all these trafficked women coming from? In a cruel paradox, it's the poor northeastern states of India, like West Bengal or Assam, where sex-ratios aren't that skewed, that make up for large parts of all the missing women.

Assam is beautiful, even during the dry season. The Brahmaputra winds its way through the plains, quietly and peacefully.
"But don't be mistaken", Shafiq says. Because during the rainy season, the river erupts over its banks, destroys fields and villages. In these already poverty-stricken regions, flooding takes away the little people have. Thousands of families are pushed into poverty and helplessness. They end up in flood shelters, vulnerable and easy prey for traffickers, like Saleha and her husband Husain. Their daughter Jaida went missing two years ago. They saw a man entering the hamlet and talking to Jaida. She vanished without a trace.

In a remote village on the dusty floodplains we meet Halida. She had just turned 14, when a man kidnapped her while fetching water. For two days he raped Halida, told her that he would bring her to Delhi in order to sell her. Halida could escape, but now she cannot go to school anymore, because all the children know of the rape and tease her. The parents, day-laborers, cannot find work anymore, because they are ostracized by the whole village. The rape destroyed the family.

While the trafficker may have lost his prey, it's unlikely that he will ever be punished. The police are corrupt and the more destruction there is, the easier it will be for him to find new victims.
Thus closes a vicious circle in which millions of India's women are trapped. The prejudices against women are so deeply engrained in the cultural fabric, that only a combined effort, old and young, urban and rural, will be able to break it once and for all.

There are over 1.2 billion indians in India. I think you fail to see the bigger picture. It's OK if India has fewer women because of their population crisis. This is evolution at work. The Planet is attempting to correct the imbalance of population. In Pakistan the fertility rate has been dropping because we are producing babies like anything. But still its over 3. Comparatively Iran has a fertility rate of 1.6 per woman. Afghanistan has over 6 children per woman! Hai Jazba Junoon to himat na haar! :D

Brilliant Logic !! (are you inspired by Nazis?) To reduce the population go for female fetocide?, and then, consequently enjoy raping other fellow female citizens because there are no brides available ??
Breivik salutes you then:

This is NOT evolution at work, its the fear of dowry/rape that indians don't want daughters, female fetocide is at rise because they they want "root cause of fear" eliminated.

To control population they can't follow the Chinese way, because if they follow Chinese way to reduce population then "izzat ghatt jaey gee".

Oh lots more needs to be said. This programme is started by so called civilised countries to control population explosion in India and China. Before aminocentesis, Indian culture was not propagating any sex determination and consequent killing of the girl child. I am not saying that People are not responsible, but its the civilized world that developed and introduced this technology in India. In the long run this will lead to a drop in India's population because of the lower female sex ratio. Already there is a scarcity of females in certain parts of the country. An alarming situation, but a creation of the west which Indians with their old ideas adopted. Read. If your purpose is to tom tom how you are better than india, then please be happy in your cocoon, i have nothing more to add. If you think you are god to dole out fatwas on other people, then also i have nothing more to add. Have a great day.

You are again thinking in far simpler terms. We can have world war 3 and destroy ourselves as a species and THAT would also be evolutionary. Whatever we do, WE are part of the process of evolution. It is Humans who decide what is right and what is wrong - Nature has a far more simpler way of doing things. There is no right or wrong for evolution; things in this universe have a tendency to find an equilibrium. The population of India is NOT an equilibrium. Something has to give. Either the fertility rates drop drastically or reduce one of the sexes. Like or hate it, evolution is ALWAYS at work. It is the greatest show on earth. ;)

Yeah they can follow the Chinese way. Or they can follow whichever way they like. It doesn't matter as long as the population crisis is set back to a manageable standard. Don't think what is right or wrong; stop the moral argument. Think in terms of a result oriented person.

Don't you think other societies facing the population problem evolved in a "decent manner", esp. those who were well educated (e.g. Japan, Europe)?
Never ever in the recent history any human society "evolved" in such a heinous way :13: . Evolution has chosen a very horrible path for them, and they are enjoying it (omg).
They have opted for a solution method that will be very painful for the common person in their society; its a pity.

See, the words you used "Decent Manner", "heinous way"; these are all human terms and perceptions. Nature doesn't care if the way is heinous or decent. Nature is a very results oriented beast. Evolutionary standards all about survival and balance.

then besides opting for female fetocide, they should also revert to the policy that Indira Gandhi put in action:

its about sterilizing 83 lakhh men (8.3 million men) :133: by force.

"On Sunday, May 17, 1992, Cable News Network aired a feature on one of the most oppressive population policies that the U.S. government has ever helped to inspire. In the mid 1970s, the late president of India, Indira Gandhi, declared a "population emergency," and sent armed troops into the villages to seize men and surgically sterilize them.

A middle-aged man interviewed during the CNN broadcast recalled how he was accosted by the Indian population police and taken to a sterilisation camp where vasectomies -- surgical procedures that make males permanently incapable of producing children -- were performed on huge numbers of victims under the most unhealthful and humiliating conditions imaginable.

The CNN broadcast revealed how people in India were tricked into being sterilised with false offers of employment and other inducements. Few dared to resist, because failure to comply with a government sterilisation order could mean prison or even death.

Women were targeted, too. According to CNN, five thousand women have died from female sterilisation procedures performed as part of the internationally-funded population programme in India alone.

The sterilisation "emergency" was abandoned after the death of Gandhi in 1984, but intense resentment remains. And so do the coercive family planning campaigns -- with the help of the United States government."

Hahaha you see what happens when a Woman is in charge? She sterilizes the men. :P But this won't happen again because this is a man's world. So let what is happening happen. Its nature's way of getting things done, by hook or by crook.
