PML-N selects PTI-free districts in Punjab and PPP chose MQM-free areas in Sindh in 1st phase. Tempo making plan.
PML-N, PPP to dominate 1st phase of LG polls
ISLAMABAD - As Punjab and Sindh will go for Local Bodies polls on Saturday, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Pakistan People’s Party have proved smart in the selection of districts where their respective political strongholds will outsmart their opponents in the first phase of the polls.
The districts where first phase of the polls would be held in both the provinces have been selected by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on the recommendations of the provincial governments.
Interestingly, the districts chosen in Punjab and Sindh for the first phase of the polls are represented by majority of lawmakers associated with the respective ruling provincial parties, the PML-N in Punjab and the PPP in Sindh.
The districts where both PML-N and PPP have lost seats to rivals in the 2013 elections will come in the second and third phase of LG polls in the two provinces.
For example, the 12 districts in Punjab where polls will be held on Saturday are dominated by the ruling PML-N where its arch rival Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) has minimum representation in National Assembly and Punjab Assembly.
It means the PML-N in the 12 districts will not face a tough competition that will help it win maximum seats in order to make a momentum that will also enable it sweep in the second and third phases in Punjab.
The districts that will go for the first phase include Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujrat, Lodhran, Vehari, Okara, Pakpattan, Bahwalnagar, Bhakkar, Kasur, Nankana Sahib and Chakwal.
LAHORE is considered as the fort of PML-N as it has grabbed 10 out of 13 National Assembly seats and 21 MPAs out of total 24 seats. The PTI on the other side will be campaigning against the PML-N with only three MPAs in Punjab Assembly from the provincial capital.
FAISALABAD: In this industrial city, PML-N will be taking part in the polls with 10 MNAs and 21 MPAs against its opponent PTI which has grabbed only one MPA seat (Khurram Shahzad) in the 2013 general elections.
GUJRAT: Except Pakistan Muslim League formerly known as PML-Q that has one MPA (Moonis Elahi) and an MNA, Gujrat seems to be an easy contest for the PML-N where it has three MNAs and seven MPAs.
LODHRAN: The entire five provincial assembly seats in this district belong to PML-N with two MNAs. Keeping in view the dominance of PML-N, the LG polls will be contested without any tough time from the opponents.
VEHARI: This is another district that has brought majority of seats for PML-N. Except for Jahanzeb Khan, a PTI MPA from PP-239, PML-N’s stronghold can be judged from the fact that seven MPAs and four MNAs will boost their campaign during the polls.
OKARA: Out of the four National Assembly seats, three belong to PML-N besides seven MPAs of nine seats of provincial assembly. Only two MPAs of PTI including Masood Shafqat and Mian Khurram represent the district in Punjab Assembly.
PAKPATTAN: The district has been included in the first phase of polls mainly because the ruling PML-N grabs three MNAs and four out of five provincial assembly seats from the constituency.
BAHAWALNAGAR: The ruling PML-N will be least facing its political rival PTI in the district which has one MPA. The PML-N on the other side has three MNAs and seven MPAs.
BHAKKAR: This district is another fort of the ruling party keeping in view the fact that all the national assembly seats (two) and four MPAs belong to the PML-N.
KASUR: This district has been included in the first phase of the polls as voters in the constituency have ensured success of five PML-N MNAs and eight out of 10 provincial assembly seats.
NANKANA SAHIB: This constituency has grabbed the entire provincial assembly seats for PML-N coupled with four MNAs thus chosen to be included in the first phase of the polls.
CHAKWAL: Despite that the district falls in Rawalpindi division, it was included in the first phase keeping in view the influence of the ruling party though Rawalpindi was listed in the third phase. Chakwal is represented by two PML-N MNAs and four MPAs.
Similarly, the eight districts chosen by the Sindh government are the stronghold of the ruling PPP in the province. Districts where the political party is represented by majority of MPAs have been selected for the first phase.
The districts in Sindh that will go for polls on Saturday are Khairpur, Sukkur, Ghotki, Larkana, Shikarpur, Qamber Shahdadkot, Jacobabad and Kashmore.
KHAIRPUR: Represented by Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, PPP is represented by four MPAs and an MNA. The two opponent MPAs belong to Pakistan Muslim League-Functional.
SUKKUR: Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah comes from the district. The PPP has three MPAs in the district compared to Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) that has one MPA.
GHOTKI: The PPP enjoys its influence in the district with two MNAs and four MPAs thus leaving its rival MQM far behind in wielding influence in the constituency.
LARKANA: Considered as the fort of PPP, this constituency has swept the entire four provincial seats and two National Assembly seats. The PPP will be least bothered about its opponent candidates in the first phase of the LG polls.
SHIKARPUR: This constituency is another district where PPP wields its influence. The ruling party in Sindh has two MPAs and an MNA from the area.
QAMBAR SHAHADTKOT: The entire four provincial assembly seats are occupied by the PPP backed by two MNAs from the district.
Similarly, Jacobabad is represented by three PPP MNAs and three MPAs. Kashmor that will go for polls on Saturday has three PPP MPAs and a lawmaker in National Assembly.
The districts where second and third phase of the LG polls will be held, are equally represented by the respective political opponents of the PML-N and the PPP.
