PESHAWAR: The Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO) announced plans for hydel power projects with the capacity of 3,911 megawatts (MW) in the province. The plan consists of 29 projects, out of which five projects with the capacity of 362MW are located in Dir.

According to an official handout issued Sunday, PEDO CEO Akbar Ayub Khan announced the plan on the eve of ground-breaking ceremony of Koto Hydel Power Plant (HPP), which will be built near Timergera in Lower Dir by a Chinese company.

The remaining four projects in Dir, including 150MW Sharmai HPP, are intended to be developed through private sector. Work on two more projects -12MW HPP in Karora, Shangla and 10MW in Jabori, Mansehra – has also been awarded to the same Chinese company and their ground breaking is expected soon.

The K-P government plans to fund these projects itself. The electricity generated by these plants can also be used to develop industries in the province.

these are not dams but run of the river projects. meaning that water is flowing downstream naturally and you just divert some of the water into a settling basin and then let it flow down through a pipe 0.5 to 1 km long onto a turbine.

Some of them are dams. Run of river projects cannot generate more than a few KW of electricity but in the article the combined capacity mentioned is 4GW

What difference does it make? People are concerned with cheap sustainable electricity. the technical details are for the professionals only.

Ghazi Brotha is a Run of the River project on Indus River and it generates about 1050 MW so its all about the size of the river.

Has national grid got anything to do with this once projects are completed or will KPK people directly benefit from this?
