you can't do anything about it .... it's a service provided by the network operator for their customers ... it's nothing to do with handsets ...

Save yourself the hassle of trying to CRACK or IDENTIFY the anonymous caller. Report it to the Metropolitan Police if it causing too much nuisance. The best thing is to call your service provider and tell them to activate ACR (Anonymous Call Rejection).

Which phone & provider are you using? For iPhone, I use iBlacklist. It has block feature for both, withheld and unknown numbers. I do not have to activate any service provider's addon services.

You have to keep on reporting everytime you get those annoying calls.

Use Mother in law option. Screen the Numbers against a list and only allow the numbers you like. Send the rest of the numbers to the recording that the called party refuse to take your call at this time.

I am with Virgin and talking about my landline not cellphone.

For Landline, you just need to register with http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/index.html

I remember having to dial some code to activate and deactivate such feature when I was with virgin service. Anyways, more information can be found at : http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=696882 & http://www.homephonechoices.co.uk/ask-our-expert/nuisance-phone-calls.html

For me, I don't use my local landline at all. It's too much of a hassle. Just use it for fax. I use sipgate.co.uk's London number. It's free to get any number (even London's 0203 and 0208, and it works on internet only) and I can have it on my iPhone, PC, Android.... and can receive calls anywhere in the world (using VoIP protocol)

Only dodgy people dont answer call with private number. If you dont owe money to anyone or didnt do anything wrong so you should have a problem answering any call. In uk almost every 3rd pakistani involve in some sort of dodgy action thats why they avoid private calls.

Hi Wasiq please which VIOP client you are using for iPhone to send and receive calls for sipgate.co.uk?

I've tried two. iSip and Bria.

iSip allow its own push notification system via its own private APNS server & once push notification is acknowledged, call connection is established. It also support multiple voip connections with less battery usage.
Bria consume slightly more power, but have superb codecs for both 3G and Wifi (they now have SILK, a skype code). Bria have G729 Codec, which is included in addon. If your iPhone is jailbreak, you can install bria and add that addon for free.

For home, I have an iPad which has Bria - iPad edition running all the time (with 12 concurrent VOIP connections) on my WiFI. Sipgate.co.uk allow mutliple logins, so I can have iPhone and iPad connection simultaneously, however I can only pick up one of them upon receiving call. I'm also using Flynumber's canada number for under $3/month on Bria simultaneously.

At Home, I've also installed SIP ATA Network device (bought from eBay) connected to my router. It can handle both, PSTN and VOIP Calls. So, I've connected my landline and my cordless phone with this box and set up with sipgate.co.uk . So, whichever is ringing, sipgate landline or my normal landline, I will get it on a single cordless phone. To add skype functionality in this setup, you'll have to replace normal cordless phone with Netgear Skype Cordless Phone (SPH200D) or RTX Dualphone Skype 4088.

[P.S] I've tried using SIP device on PTCL connection (back home in Pakistan), but it wasn't working. I found out that PTCL is blocking port 5060 and 5061 (after mumbai incident). However, LinkdotDSL and many other providers are not blocking VOIP.

Its not as easy as you think. Altaf Hussain Answers all the calls, even the calls from his former mother in Law. Besides, its your discreation which call you like to answer. If you are calling someone, there is no need to hide your identity.
