Turkey has vowed to retaliate after a Turkish air force RF-4E reconnaissance jet was shot down by Syria near the Turkish-Syrian border. Turkey claims the jet was unarmed and broadcasting its identity when it strayed briefly into Syrian airspace and was then shot down over international waters by a Syrian missile. Syria claims the Turkish F-4 was flying at a low altitude in Syrian airspace and was shot down by land-based anti-aircraft guns with a maximum range of 2.5km, placing the F-4 firmly in Syrian airspace when it was shot down. Turkey hosts the Syrian National Council and elements of the Free Syrian Army but so far has restricted the flow of arms to Syrian rebels and not allowed attacks on Syria from Turkish territory
