WE ARE SORRY AND DEEPLY REGRET WHAT HAPPENED
The murder of HAFIZ MOEEZ BUTT AND MUNEEB BUTT in Sialkot has sent shocking signals to all over the world about Pakistan where such acts of horrific and barbaric nature could take place in the daylight in the presence of law enforcing agencies. This is the clearest possible example of lawlessness in a country that has effectively become a police state. I am sure this incident would not have gone to this extent if there were no police presence.
In a country where extrajudicial killings go unnoticed and police is allowed to do fake encounters to kill criminals because neither our police have got the ability to do professional investigation nor our justice system is strong and efficient to punish the criminals, innocent citizens would continue to be humiliated by the corrupt and characterless police officers.
The fact that two innocent boys were brutally tortured, murdered and their dead bodies were mutilated for hours in public in the presence of police and there was no action by any authority for days until the Supreme Court took notice of the incident, just shows the pathetic state of affairs in the country. This incident was a national tragedy damaging the whole fabric of society and sending very negative signals about Pakistan internationally. At times when a major part of the country is devastated by floods and we are asking for help from all over the world, we need hope, unity and sense of belonging, while incidents like this create desperation, cause deep emotional pain and grief to masses. Most Pakistanis after this incident are feeling very low and have lost their sense of pride.
It is the responsibility of whole nation to take steps to redress this situation of despair and pain. First of all we should make sure that people responsible for this heinous crime get the punishment they deserve. The involved policemen should also be tried for murder of innocent civilians. I hope justice would be done after the Honorable Chief Justice of Pakistan has taken notice of this. However, just providing justice to the family of victims would not be enough, it is a collective responsibility and we, as a nation, should ask for forgiveness from the grieved parents of the victims, as this is the only way to redeem ourselves.
The incident is all over the international media, Internet and Youtube and it continues to affect millions of people and especially Pakistanis all over the world. Media, civil society and human right organizations in Pakistan should play their role and press the government for a public apology from the aggrieved family. As the Head of State, President should ask for this forgiveness from the family in public and this should be broadcasted on the national media. We should send a clear signal to the world community that we could do anything to bring back our pride as a nation.
Through this forum, I offer my deepest condolences to the grieved family and also ask for their forgiveness. My apology is not going to bring back their loved ones, we could at least say:
WE ARE SORRY AND DEEPLY REGRET AT YOUR LOSS OF LOVED ONES
May ALMIGHTY ALLAH forgive us for all of our sins and show us the right path.
