As the world expresses solidarity with Malala Yousafzai’s stand on female education, Pakistan finds itself in the bottom 10 of new country rankings for the education of poor females, according to a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) report.

Unesco’s Education for All Global Monitoring Report (EFAGMR) revealed Pakistan is in the bottom 10 countries, according to the proportion of poor girls who have never been in school. According to the report, only six African countries fare worse than Pakistan in this respect. It revealed 62% girls in Pakistan, aged between seven and 15, have never spent time in a classroom. This is compared to 30% in India and 9% in Bangladesh.
The report showed Pakistan was also in the bottom 10 countries ranked according to the time young women spend in school in their lifetime. It stated girls, between the ages of 17 and 22, on an average spend one year in school in Pakistan. Girls in India and Bangladesh, in comparison, spend 2.9 and 4.4 years in school on an average.
“Almost two-thirds of Pakistan’s poor girls have never been to school,” said EFAGMR director Pauline Rose in a press release.
“Without a real step change by the government … they will be denied equal opportunities in work and life forever,” she added.
“As we stand together on ‘Malala Day’, it is vital to stand up for what she believes in, and highlight difficulties many poor girls and young women face in getting to school.”

Wonderful post. Sometimes when I see the way Indians and Chinese are galloping ahead of us Pakis, literally a chill runs down my spine. Indian students far outnumber the Pakistani students, even after accounting for their statistical majority. I would even say that the Indian IIT's are better than most of the US undergrad schools. And look what we have in Pakistan? While we keep investing heavily in higher education (which has yielded some results), the state of our primary education is next to pathetic. It makes one cringe when laptops are dished out like peanuts and poor children either don't get any education at all or have to study while sitting on graves. I met a well educated relative of mine on my recent trip to Lahore, and all he had in praise of Shahbaz Sharif was sarkein, naaliyan, underpass, overpass. When I asked about 'real' educational and health sector achievements, he was as blank as Nawaz Sharif (and that is seriously blank!).

Wake up Pakistan!

We need to declare 3-4 emergencies in our country and I would say that education along with check on explosive population growth are right at the top.

I do agree with everything you said but I do have a problem when we start comparing ourselves with countries like India and Pakistan. Using countries as examples is good where we could learn from them and emulate them but trying to compare with any other country at this time will only hurt and not help us.

Compared to us Russia is doing much better. They were able to export lot of their technology along with oil to prop up their economy. The point is that the bomb was not able to save them from the break up but that break up was inevitable. The Marxist system failed them and not education.

Same is true for North Korea - if they get rid of the dictatorship, the antiquated Marxist system and end their isolation then you will see that they will be way ahead of us since they are investing in education - DPRK is supposedly one of the poorest countries in the world and they may not have enough to eat but their literacy rate is 100%. If they break the shackles that are holding them back then you will see that within no time they will be galloping too....Same can not be said about Pakistan. It will take us 20-30 years to bring our literacy rate up to 80%. We should stop kidding ourselves and accept the reality. Acting like an ostrich won't help us.....

The above is all useless, is there any country where students get free laptops?

Well we are one of the most advanced in education since we hand out free laptops so no need to worry :)

Well mrk, as of now, I want us to get hurt, to feel the pain at the prospect of being left behind. We have been sitting on our backsides for far too long. And what scares me to death is when I go back to Pakistan and see educated people talking about sarkein, gutter, naaliyaan, khambay etc., while children get bitten by mice and if they do manage to grow up, end up studying on a grave (assuming they can find a school in the first place). We are a strange nation. We love gimmicks and the clowns who con us with them!
