The Maker of Java is Seeking $9.3 Billion From Google

There is a long-running legal battle between Oracle and Google over the use of Java, an Oracle product, in Android. In the latest court filing, Oracle is shooting for the moon: $9.3 billion in copyright damages from Google.

The copyright fight dates back six years, when Oracle first filed suit against Google, for both copyright and patent infringement relating to its use of Java in Android. Oracle lost the first round, but a federal appeals court sent the case back for a second trial on the copyright issues.

The case is important for a few reasons, most obviously that $9.3 billion would put a serious hole in the $16 billion-per-year operating income of Google’s parent company. But it’s also a landmark case over whether or not APIs, the structural blocks that help applications talk to each other, are copyrightable.

The trial is set to begin on May 9th, although regardless of which way the jury goes, Oracle is unlikely to ever see $9.3 billion in damages. In the first trial, Oracle’s first two damage estimates were thrown out, and the judge isn’t likely to be any more sympathetic this time around.

They should be happy that Google gave a new lease of life to this monstrosity of a language called Java.

The case has been sent back to the same judge who has already observed that only 3% of source code overlaps in these API's and that 3% is a necessary for interoperability. This time the judge has to see weather google's use of the copyrighted API's was a "fair use" under the law or not. In any case, $9.3 billion is a ridiculous figure and the judge previously did not even agree with ever $1 billion claim.

I certainly feel Google is at fault & it is time google sort out there own back yard after EU cut of monopoly of Google in Europe. But on the same time Google has adapted changing algorythms & many cheating practices in terms of common average user advertising practices to benefit itself. I wish google is heavily penelized, warned or even barred from search engine monopolistic practices in regards to yahoo or others are better by far, basic simplicity on the whole.

JAVA is one of the most beautiful language man ever created.

Its just a tool dear. If you have got accustomed to it and works for you, good. Computer languages are just an easy to use abstraction to manipulate the one's and zero's that the ALU can understand. No point in getting too attached to a tool !! :P

On abstract level can anyone answer how much does a search engine which any other search engine can do the same for them is Google by far any different in comparison ? Or to make it stand out ? Java is useful for applets etc & Java is much better in other things where google isn't !
