The IRI survey and the PTI - An Article by Talat Hussain

Of all the political parties whose political worth and public weight has been surveyed by the International Republican Institute, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) should worry the most. While it is nicely placed at the number two position in the pecking order of Pakistani voters’ priorities, it continues to lose momentum and shed popularity points — a trend indicated by previous surveys of public opinion by the same organisation. This does not augur well for a party that styles itself as a harbinger of hope of a new tomorrow and claims, with fair accuracy, to be the ‘third’ option capable of turning Pakistan around.

Several factors seem to have converged to subvert the PTI’s upswing whose best display was its large gatherings in Lahore, Karachi and Quetta. The party has not taken complete organisational shape yet. Its internal elections — an admirable achievement — do not resonate with the role powerful political forces are expected to play in today’s Pakistan. The country is desperate for a strong and stable leadership to emerge and blow away doomsday scenarios being built all around. The we-mean-business image isn’t there about the PTI as it struggles to evolve structures at the grass roots level that should eventually stamp its presence on the minds of the voters with enough consistency to dilute their doubts about whether the party is real or ephemeral.

These delays in finalising the look and shape of the party are in turn due to the stark differences and strong power play at the top party echelons. For an organisation that is yet to see the inside of parliament except for the lone victory of Imran Khan in the 2002 elections, the PTI’s top brass is remarkably divided. Here, three powerful groups (the Old, the New, and Khan’s friends) seldom coalesce and mostly collide when it comes to setting the direction of the party. Official positions are easily overrun by unofficial weight-pulling, which is done in ways too many to name. Meeting different people from these different and differing groups makes one feel as if they represent not one, but three parties. This diversity could have been turned into political bounty if Imran Khan had mediated well and was hands-on, on a day-to-day basis, in running the affairs of the party. After all, the more diversity, the wider the net of party appeal across the spectrum of competing views. That has not happened. So, from who will sit next to the Khan (as he is generally called) in a press conference to whose research is more credible on a particular subject of national importance, decisions on a broad range of issues are left to chance, or hurriedly-called meetings that produce more divisive talk than coherent suggestions. Normally, in the end the Khan decides what to do and what to say.

And this is where the biggest problem of the PTI rests: over the months, Imran Khan has said a lot and done little, making his most ardent supporters wonder whether even 25 per cent of what has been committed in public is even marginally doable. Take the issue of the PTI’s long marches, whether threatened, promised or attempted. The list is long and has an incredible variety of events that provoked the PTI leaders to saddle up the horse of protest and then get off it after enjoying a brief, light trot. The tsunami forecast has not yielded any result even though it has been made time and again. Nor has anyone tried to explain to a bewildered public that this refers to Imran Khan’s assessment of sweeping the elections and not the coming of a strong wave of street agitation, which if it were to happen, would be as much cathartic for them as productive in terms of seriously challenging the present set-up.

So, from the public’s point of view (and that is what reflects in the IRI survey), the PTI is becoming a bit of a habitual late-comer, or it simply never arrives when it should. The party has not been seen organising any public activity of impact over the crippling gas crisis, for example. Combating corruption, loot and plunder is mere stuff of statements. Inflation, the killing fields of Karachi, the flood-devastated lands of interior Sindh, the political and administrative wreck that Balochistan has become, girding poverty and widespread hopelessness are all things that matter to the public. They want to not just hear an alternative narrative but also see it shape up before their eyes. They would happily be inclined to board a ship whose course is set and destination is marked. The PTI, for all the hard work that its cadres have put in, especially the youth, has not become that ship yet. Closer to the elections when the public begins to see things in black and white, the expectation is that voting choices before them should also be properly formed ones. Fuzziness wins no hearts come election time. The PTI can only reverse the declining trend of public approval by defining itself and by walking its talk.

It is easy to criticize and devalue the election process in the party , none of the parties in pakistan has gone through it and no party is democratic at all. Every party is buying winning candidates and some giving public gimmicks just before the elections. PTI should be applauded for the trendsetting of party elections which will also define the future of other parties as well. Soon enough other party workers will stand up for their rights of contesting elections within the party and not always remain the minions. How long will the nation be slaves to the offsprings of corrupts bhuttos and shareef , it is time for a common man to rise and become a leader.

Totally disagree with you Mr. Talat

Lets say PTI popularity goes down for the reason you mentioned.

Can you please mentioned the reason that make the increase of Mr. Nawaz Sharif PMLN? other then hiring almost all the anchor person and going after PTI like PTI is the reason of all the destruction of Pakistan at the moment and buying all the lotas specially the followers of Musharraf which they use to criticize PTI that PTI now becoming the B team of Musharraf, but in the end they become the joint venture of Musharraf league + PMLN.

The most controversial thing about this survey is done by IPOR who have connection with PMLN.
And another fishy thing is, 2 survey of IRI within 1 year. Can you please give us a example of any year where IRI issue 2 survey within a year.

before Oct.30th Jalsa, all you guys saying the same things about PTI and then according to survey PTI was nothing.

This is all the stupid tactics of desperate PMLN. Mark my word ............... no one can beat PTI..... Insha Allah.

that is what the others are known for (as we are loudly claiming it). If we were to be better we need to follow a different track - an unmarked one. I know it is hard but the internal powerplay that Talat is referring to is making it even harder. I recon Talat's analysis makes sense, as I personally have noticed the lack of timeliness and clarity on the part of senior leadership of the party.

No matter what we say, like media is unfair, governments are utilizing public resources for publicity and so forth, but the point is that this is how it has been done in this poor country for decades. The fact remains that if the PTI claims to be an alternative, a viable one, then the top leadership has to understand, and act according to merit without considering who is who.

And lastly, the above comments reflect my own sincere analysis.

Without elections in the party the party can not claim to be democratic , and once the candidates are selected instead of elected then we can not stop the moroosi siyasat at all. PTI has lost popularity but it is worth it. PTI only gianed enough popularity after 31 october jalsa then membership campaign began and it was really difficult to conduct elections but essential as well. I am happy that PTI leadership has chosen the right way. There are always lobbying and fights where there are elections but thats the way it is but the candidate chosen in the end will be the one hosen by the PTI members themselves.

PTI Lovers ! do not buy this gimmick, being relayed on different forum consistently this week. It is a planned campaign to demoralize PTI people. Matter of the fact is that IK and PTI are doing the basic organizational work 24/7 and they have to finish it before election announcement. Once it is over and elections called, PTI leadership will jump into open field and we know what kind of whirl winds it can make. Such threads are desperate attempt to misled and depress the people, little worried about IK not following TUQ line. I was furious too then but party discipline and my own responsible thinking placed me back with PTI plank. TUQ and IK seem to be joining hands near the elections as both speak for one cause.

its difficult to settle an issue amongst 4 people, whereas PTI is going through internal elections of 1000s of electoral lists and they expect everything is going to go in best direction since October jalsa highly impossible, any ways criticism will come as there are more expectations hopefully after party elections everything will come on track and Pakistan will see an electoral revolution that has never been witnessed before.

I always like the analysis of Talat Hussain, apparently Talat is right, but he is missing a very basic point about IK. If you want to judge someone's performence you should check the past achievements. I predict IK will succeed because of his vision and determination. Imran Khan is a fast learner, politic is new for him but in last 16 years he made many mistakes still he is making. Imran Khan is under a microscopic scrutiny, we all want him to succeed, our expectation is very high. Do you ever compare Zardari and Nawaz with Imran Khan, you can't becuse there is no comparision. Many things IK team is woking on, which people have no idia, all of a sudden you will see the surg. Finally PTI will be the winner. If you want to know what IK youth are doing you will be surprise, for instance PTI TV, PTI radio, PTI inter party election coverage on social media, their workers are so devoted that evey time you will see a new idea, they will be the force behind their compaign on election day.

Our people are generally emotional and when IK did not participate in TUQ's long march, the reaction is shown in the IRI survey (though I still have doubts on its creditably!).

However, I think that this loss of popularity is only temporary....people's disappointed will soon fade when they will see that TUQ did not achieve what he claimed. Also, no other party can charge the crown as PTI and its young supporters can. You will see the real momentum near the elections which In Sha Allah will blow away the opponents.....

I am sure that IK and his team are watching all this very closely....they have proved time and again that their decisions have been timely and correct. I am confident that they will come out as a winner again.....May Allah be with Pakistan and PTI....

Although, do not completely agree with the analysis. However, very well written and thought out piece. Our focus at this juncture should elections rather than further meddling within the party. These will be historic elections in pakistan and it's results will have immense repercussions for this country.

Hey Guys HOLD ON why do we immediately start bashing others, Calm down passionate folks, if we are really sincere with PTI then our duty is to support PTI, motivate masses and most importantly VOTE for PTI. Let the party leadership decide its their duty to make proper and timely decisions and our sincere duty to stand firm by the decisions that are made, whether we agree to them or disagree, this is what is called DISCIPLINE and this is how PTI grows stronger. The party Leadership has tons of information on every matter that we dont have, still we start pressurizing them, the latest example is of TUQ long march joining/not joining situation, where we did not waste a second in passing our verdict while majority wanted to join and bashed IK/PTI and after a couple of days we had to pull back with a sorry face.We must not pressurize our leader to the extent that we compel him to say "Had i been in that container my youth would have not let me go alive". We love him and respect him but that should be evident from our manners. So please Discipline.
I have lot of respect for Tallat, but My leader is IMRAN KHAN. His political word will be the last word for me and what about YOU?
