Story of the Cow ( A story from Quran)

Quran commentators narrate the following:An old man from among the Children of Israel was very rich, and he had some nephews who wished he would die soon to inherit him. One day, one of them on purpose murdered him at night and threw him on the road -or at the door of one of his own brothers. In the morning, the people found the dead body and they disputed over him. His nephew -the murderer -came and began to weep and cry. Some people said:Why do you dispute over him? Why do not you go to Allah's Prophet (Peace be upon him)? His nephew came and complained to Musa (Moses (Peace be upon him. Musa (Peace be upon him) said: by Allah! Anyone who knows anything about this murdered man, he should let us know. But, no one knew anything about it. Thereupon, they asked Musa (Peace be upon him) to ask his Lord concerning this issue. Musa (Peace be upon him) asked his Lord and he was commanded to order them to slaughter a cow.Moreover they say that: If those people were to slaughter any cow, they would fulfill the purpose thereof. But, they made it difficult for themselves (by asking so many questions thereof), and thus Allah the Almighty made it difficult for them (by stipulating so many conditions for the desired cow). They asked about its description, color and age; and they were answered with what was scarce and dear (in a way to make it hard for them to find it). The point is that they were commanded to slaughter neither a too old cow, nor a too young, but (it is) between the two conditions.It is said that they could not find a cow with all these descriptions but with a man who was righteous and good to his father. They asked him to submit it to them, but he refused. They offered him what equals its weight in gold. But, he refused. Then, they offered him an amount of gold that equals its weight ten-times. Finally, he accepted their offer and submitted it to them. Then, Musa (Peace be upon him) commanded them to slaughter it. Then, Musa (Peace be upon him) instructed them with the Command of Allah to strike the dead man with a piece of the cow. When they stroke him with part thereof, he was resurrected by Allah the Almighty. Musa (Peace be upon him) asked him: who's your murderer? He said: it was my nephew who killed me. Then, he died again.Allah the Almighty can bring all the dead people to life when He wishes to.

ALLAH, Almighty, says
31:28



مَّا خَلْقُكُمْ وَلَا بَعْثُكُمْ إِلَّا كَنَفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ ۗ إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ بَصِيرٌ
Yusuf Ali
And your creation or your resurrection is in no wise but as an individual soul: for Allah is He Who hears and sees (all things).

The Quran narrates the story

Allah the Almighty says:

Surat Al-Baqarah (The Cow) - سورة البقر

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم​

2:67وَإِذْ قَالَ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَأْمُرُكُمْ أَن تَذْبَحُوا بَقَرَةً ۖ قَالُوا أَتَتَّخِذُنَا هُزُوًا ۖ قَالَ أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ أَنْ أَكُونَ مِنَ الْجَاهِلِينَ
Yusuf Ali
And remember Moses said to his people: "Allah commands that ye sacrifice a heifer." They said: "Makest thou a laughing-stock of us?" He said: "Allah save me from being an ignorant (fool)!"




2:68

قَالُوا ادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّن لَّنَا مَا هِيَ ۚ قَالَ إِنَّهُ يَقُولُ إِنَّهَا بَقَرَةٌ لَّا فَارِضٌ وَلَا بِكْرٌ عَوَانٌ بَيْنَ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ فَافْعَلُوا مَا تُؤْمَرُونَ
Yusuf Ali
They said: "Beseech on our behalf Thy Lord to make plain to us what (heifer) it is!" He said; "He says: The heifer should be neither too old nor too young, but of middling age. Now do what ye are commanded!"




2:69

قَالُوا ادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّن لَّنَا مَا لَوْنُهَا ۚ قَالَ إِنَّهُ يَقُولُ إِنَّهَا بَقَرَةٌ صَفْرَاءُ فَاقِعٌ لَّوْنُهَا تَسُرُّ النَّاظِرِينَ
Yusuf Ali
They said: "Beseech on our behalf Thy Lord to make plain to us Her colour." He said: "He says: A fawn-coloured heifer, pure and rich in tone, the admiration of beholders!"




2:70

قَالُوا ادْعُ لَنَا رَبَّكَ يُبَيِّن لَّنَا مَا هِيَ إِنَّ الْبَقَرَ تَشَابَهَ عَلَيْنَا وَإِنَّا إِن شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَمُهْتَدُونَ
Yusuf Ali
They said: "Beseech on our behalf Thy Lord to make plain to us what she is: To us are all heifers alike: We wish indeed for guidance, if Allah wills."




2:71

قَالَ إِنَّهُ يَقُولُ إِنَّهَا بَقَرَةٌ لَّا ذَلُولٌ تُثِيرُ الْأَرْضَ وَلَا تَسْقِي الْحَرْثَ مُسَلَّمَةٌ لَّا شِيَةَ فِيهَا ۚ قَالُوا الْآنَ جِئْتَ بِالْحَقِّ ۚ فَذَبَحُوهَا وَمَا كَادُوا يَفْعَلُونَ
Yusuf Ali
He said: "He says: A heifer not trained to till the soil or water the fields; sound and without blemish." They said: "Now hast thou brought the truth." Then they offered her in sacrifice, but not with good-will.




2:72
وَإِذْ قَتَلْتُمْ نَفْسًا فَادَّارَأْتُمْ فِيهَا ۖ وَاللَّهُ مُخْرِجٌ مَّا كُنتُمْ تَكْتُمُونَ

Yusuf Ali
Remember ye slew a man and fell into a dispute among yourselves as to the crime: But Allah was to bring forth what ye did hide.




2:73

فَقُلْنَا اضْرِبُوهُ بِبَعْضِهَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُحْيِي اللَّهُ الْمَوْتَىٰ وَيُرِيكُمْ آيَاتِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ
Yusuf Ali
So We said: "Strike the (body) with a piece of the (heifer)." Thus Allah bringeth the dead to life and showeth you His Signs: Perchance ye may understand.




2:74

ثُمَّ قَسَتْ قُلُوبُكُم مِّن بَعْدِ ذَٰلِكَ فَهِيَ كَالْحِجَارَةِ أَوْ أَشَدُّ قَسْوَةً ۚ وَإِنَّ مِنَ الْحِجَارَةِ لَمَا يَتَفَجَّرُ مِنْهُ الْأَنْهَارُ ۚ وَإِنَّ مِنْهَا لَمَا يَشَّقَّقُ فَيَخْرُجُ مِنْهُ الْمَاءُ ۚ وَإِنَّ مِنْهَا لَمَا يَهْبِطُ مِنْ خَشْيَةِ اللَّهِ ۗ وَمَا اللَّهُ بِغَافِلٍ عَمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ
Yusuf Ali


Thenceforth were your hearts hardened: They became like a rock and even worse in hardness. For among rocks there are some from which rivers gush forth; others there are which when split asunder send forth water; and others which sink for fear of Allah. And Allah is not unmindful of what ye do.​

[Al-Baqara: 67: 74]

It is worth mentioning that the Quranic surah that narrates this story was named al-Baqra (the Cow).

In Urdu

اور یاد کرو جب موسیٰ نے اپنی قوم سے کہا :اللہ تمھیں حکم دیتا ہے کہ (خون پر قسمیں کھانے کے لیے) تم ایک گاے ذبح کرو ۔ وہ کہنے لگے :کیاتم ہم سے مذاق کرتے ہو ؟ اُس نے کہا: میں اللہ کی پناہ مانگتا ہوں کہ اِس طرح کا جاہل بن جاؤں۔​

67

اُنھوں نے کہا: اچھا ، اپنے رب کو پکارو کہ وہ ہمیں بتائے کہ گاے کیسی ہونی چاہیے ۔اُس نے کہا: وہ فرماتا ہے کہ گاے نہ بوڑھی ہو نہ بچھیا ، اِن کے بیچ کی میانہ ہو۔ اب جاؤ اور وہ کرو جس کا تمھیں حکم دیا جا رہا ہے۔

بولے :اپنے رب کو پکاروکہ وہ یہ بھی واضح کرے کہ اُس کا رنگ کیسا ہو۔ اُس نے کہا :وہ فرماتا ہے کہ وہ سنہری ہو، شوخ رنگ، ایسی کہ دیکھنے والوں کو خوش آجائے ۔

بولے :اپنے رب کو پکاروکہ اچھی طرح وضاحت کے ساتھ بتائے کہ وہ (گاے) کیسی ہو ، ہمیں گایوں میں کچھ شبہ پڑ رہا ہے، اور اللہ نے چاہا تو اب ہم اُس کا پتا پا لیں گے۔

اُس نے کہا :وہ فرماتا ہے کہ وہ گاے محنت والی نہ ہو کہ زمین جوتتی اور فصلوں کو پانی دیتی ہو ۔ وہ ایک ہی رنگ کی ہو ،اُس میں کسی دوسرے رنگ کی آمیزش نہ ہو ۔ بولے: اب تم واضح بات لائے ہو۔ اِس طرح اُنھوں نے اُس کو ذبح کیا اور لگتا نہ تھا کہ وہ یہ کریں گے۔

اور وہ واقعہ بھی یادکرو ،جب تم نے ایک شخص کوقتل کر دیا ۔ پھر (جھوٹی قسمیں کھائیں اور) اِس کا الزام ایک دوسرے پر دھرنے لگے، اور اللہ نے فیصلہ کر لیا کہ جو کچھ تم چھپا رہے تھے، وہ اُسے ظاہر کر دے گا۔

چنانچہ ہم نے کہا :اِس (مردے) کو اُسی (گاے) کا ایک ٹکڑا مارو (جو قسمیں کھانے کے لیے ذبح کی گئی ہے تو وہ زندہ ہو گیا ) ۔ اللہ اِسی طرح مردوں کو زندہ کرے گا اور وہ تمھیں اپنی نشانیاں دکھاتا ہے تاکہ تم سمجھ سے کام لو۔

(تم یہی کرتے رہے ، یہاں تک کہ) اِس کے بعد پھر تمھارے دل سخت ہو گئے ، اِس طرح کہ گویا وہ پتھر ہیں یا اُن سے بھی زیادہ سخت ۔ اور پتھروں میں تو ایسے بھی ہیں جن سے نہریں پھوٹتی ہیں اور ایسے بھی ہیں جو پھٹ جاتے ہیں اور اُن سے پانی بہ نکلتا ہے اور ایسے بھی ہیں کہ اللہ کے خوف سے گر پڑتے ہیں۔ (یہ حقیقت ہے کہ تم یہی کرتے رہے ہو)، اور جو کچھ تم کرتے رہے ہو ، اللہ اُس سے بے خبر نہیں ہے۔
