Sri Lanka to put Pak imports under lens

NEW DELHI: A Sri Lankan ruling coalition party, Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), has called for a thorough check of all imports from Pakistan to the island nation after 250 kg of heroin was seized by narcotics and Customs officials.

The largest ever drug haul in south Asia, the consignment had arrived in a container from Pakistan to Orugodwatta where it was seized. The JHU has asked the government to get to the bottom of the drug cartel operating in Sri Lanka %and its links with Pakistan and Afghanistan.


The heroin was concealed in tins of grease.

At least two persons, including a Pakistani national, were arrested in connection with the seizure.
The party said in a statement that many banned goods were being smuggled into Sri Lanka from Pakistan "through a local Muslim channel''.

According to an AP report, Sri Lankan authorities have seized large quantities of heroin and other drugs shipped from Pakistan in recent years, including 55 kg of heroin concealed in fake potatoes in 2010.

According to a report in Lanka C News, the consignment had been sent to a Pakistani national from his compatriot in Karachi. "There had been several instances that drugs had been tried to smuggle into the country by Muslim nationals,'' said the report. Led by Buddhist monks, JHU is known for its Sinhala nationalism.

Sept 03, Colombo: Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), a coalition party of Sri Lankan government has asked the government to thoroughly check all the imports to the island, especially from Pakistan, for dangerous drugs.
JHU national organizer Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe said the identity behind the drug dealing in the island has been revealed with the latest finding of a massive cache of heroin in a container brought from Pakistan.
He also urged the authorities to focus on the kingpins of the racket instead of penalizing the minor figures linked with the incident.
Warnasinghe emphasized that a careful observation of local businesses linked with Pakistan and Afghanistan is essential under the pretext.
He said that Sri Lanka has become the Wonder of South Asia by being a hub of drug dealing.
A 260 kilo gram stock of heroin worth billions of rupees was seized on Friday by Sri Lankan Narcotics Bureau and the Customs Department from a container which had arrived in Sri Lanka from Pakistan. The discovery was made when a container, declared to be containing lubricants, was inspected at the Custom Clearing Section at Orugodawatta.


The police have arrested a Pakistani national and three Sri Lankans for questioning.
