Police fails to find info on CJCSC’s son-in-law abduction
* Gen Majeed’s son-in-law kidnapped while returning home after Iftar party on Wed
* Investigation team official says kidnappers haven’t contacted family yet
Staff Report
LAHORE: The Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) police has failed to find any clues regarding the abduction of the son-in-law of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) Gen Tariq Majeed. However, other teams comprising intelligence agencies personnel are also investigating the case.
Malik Amir Aftab, Gen Majeed’s son-in-law, ran a jewellery shop at the Civic Centre, Garden Town. On Wednesday night, he was returning home after attending an iftar party when unidentified armed men in a car and two motorcycles intercepted and kidnapped him on gunpoint. Later, the Faisal Town police registered a case on the complaint of Amir’s brother-in-law Nasim Malik and started an investigation.
Muhammad Shafiq, sub-inspector in-charge of the Faisal Town police station’s investigation cell, told Daily Times, “Immediately after registration of the case, the high-ups handed over the matter to the CIA, where a special team is working on the issue.”
Contact: The teams are investigating various aspects of the case, including the possibility of kidnapping for ransom, monetary dispute besides and an act of terrorism. A police officer of the investigation team, requesting anonymity, said that all the teams were clueless so far, as Malik’s cell phones had been switched off, and the kidnappers had not contacted the family yet. The officer added that the police also found out that Malik had given Rs 2.7 million to one of his friends, whom the police is interrogating. He said that during initial investigations, it had been established that this was a case of kidnapping for ransom or a money issue.
However, on the other hand, a large number of traders from Barkat Market protested on Thursday afternoon for Malik’s immediate release. The protesters chanted slogans against the police and the kidnapping. They shut down the entire market, burnt tyres and blocked both sides of the road for more than an hour. The protesters held placards, appealing to the president and prime minister of Pakistan for Malik’s immediate release. Due to the traders’ protest, traffic on Canal Road, Kalma Chowk, Garden Town and Link Road, Model Town, remained blocked for more than an hour. Later, police high-ups reached the scene and assured the protesters of Malik’s immediate release and stern action against the criminals.
Qaumi Tajir Ittehad General Secretary Dr Amin Chaudhry told Daily Times it was a case of kidnapping for ransom and so far the police had failed to find any clues. He added that this was not the first case of a businessman being kidnapped and such types of incidents were going on in the city, which clearly showed the police’s negligence.
