Islamabad: Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan (SCBAP) on Tuesday decided against observing countrywide strike on June 14 against the references filed with Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) against Justice Qazi Faez Isa.
Addressing a presser here in the Lahore Press Club, the secretary of SCBAP, Azmat Ullah Chaudhary Advocate, stated that announcement of strike on June 14 was personal decision of Amanullah [President SCBAP].
Members of SCBAP Executive Committee were also present in the presser.
Chaudhry added that SCBAP has no link with the call of strike.
“At present, country is passing through the phase of the accountability. The process of the accountability must not be halted. To ensure supremacy of the law, Constitution allows filing references against judges”, Chaudhry was quoted as saying.
The SCBAP secretary warned that if accountability drive is stopped now, then it would never happen again.
He revealed that some elements were making this issue complex for personal interests.
The secretary added that SCBAP ratifies decision if majority of the members votes in favor of it. “If the majority is against the decision, then it can be decision of an individual member only but not that of the SCBAP”, added Chaudhry.
The members of the bar also condemned the language used by President SCBAP in talk shows.
Separately on June 10, the Lawyers Action Committee (LAC) had opposed the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) decision to launch a countrywide protest and refused to be a part of the strike against the references filed with SJC against Justice Qazi Faez Isa and a high court judge on June 14.
The LAC passed a resolution and decided to stand with the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) and said that according to Article 209 of the Constitution, judges could also be held accountable.
