The Khunjerab National Park was established primarily as a means to protect the Marco Polo sheep (as well as Snow Leopards and Bharal) living in the area.[SUP][39][/SUP] The borders of the park were mapped by Schaller in 1974, after a short field survey. The park was formally established on April 29, 1979 by Prime Minister of Pakistan Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who said that "it must become a world famous park".[SUP][40][/SUP]

Despite being listed as a category 2 national park, banning human activities including agriculture and hunting, the park was poorly managed, meaning that illegal hunting of the Marco Polo sheep continued. Because of this, the International Union for Conservation of Nature commissioned Norwegian biologist Per Wegge to do a wildlife survey of the park in 1988.[SUP][41][/SUP] Wegge found that there was no evidence of competition between the domestic sheep being illegally grazed and the wild Marco Polo sheep, and that most of the illegal hunting was not being done by local Wakhi residents, but by Pakistani military and civil officials.[SUP][41][/SUP] He therefore proposed that the park be reclassified, allowing grazing and commercial hunting, with the profits going to local residents. However, the government overlooked Wegge's suggestions, instead drawing up a new management plan, which both the IUCN and the World Wildlife Fund supported as a means to preserve the park and protect the wildlife. Wegge was critical of the government scheme, claiming that it was based on financial considerations, with the Pakistani government hoping to attract tourists to the area.

The IUCN agreed with this, and has since distanced itself from the national park.[SUP][42][/SUP] To help protect the animals from poaching, the WWF has created the Khunjerab Village Organization, which relies on people living in the area to report poaching or endangered animal sightings.[SUP][43][/SUP]

I feel so sorry for these poor animals like marco polo sheep, snow tigers, asiatic bears and markhoor..each of them are now few in numbers and mostly migrated to neighbouring china and Iran.Look at India they allocate budgets every year for the protection of their wildlife.India has world largest population of Asian lions(only exists in india),and their tigers and elephants are protected by govt..

this news can't be false,,,i belong to swat,,,when the army came to swat ,,the people thought now the forests will be protected, the illegal way of catching fish will stop.....but to tell u the truth the pak army is involved more in supporting the mafia who are busy in cutting the forests. the army guys themselves use the generator etc for catching fishes . ...i am not against army,,,,but this organization should be brought under law,,,what we pakistani think and saw them the way they are not.....most of them are more corrupt in every way and think they are above the law ,,,,,,,,,we must think about it before it is too late..therefore this report is 100% true that army must be involved in hunting this edangered species as they are doing such activities in other places of pakistan.......

regarding topic i have read it "meaning that illegal hunting of the Marco Polo sheep continued. kahan se pata chalta army involved in it and btw its not the credible source par bhi there is nothing mentioned about army involved in it

Re: Say Good Bye To a Rare Animal,Thanks To Pak Army..

@abdlsy,,,,my friend first of all i have mentioned some of them are corrupt and criminals that is of course true., the article is regarding illegal hunting and armed forces are involved in it so who will protect it ..as a citizen of this country i have the right to point any bad people in any organisation whether army or any other...don't take everybody like yourself... we are law abiding people we will respect law in any situation. if we get a chance of any we are hopeful and trustful we will never abuse our position ....if there is no law then there is no need for a land to exist..humans will live peacefully in a piece of land where there is law....don't mind it if there is anything wrong with any organisation whether army or anybody we will mention it.
some of the army personnel in the past and current pakistan are criminals..they should be punished otherwise will be difficult to hold this vibrant society..
