Saudi National Day: Kingdom a ‘champion’ of Muslim unity, says OIC chief

Saudi Arabia’s support to the Islamic world has been put under the spotlight by the Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) as the kingdom marks its 83rd National Day.
Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said the occasion would celebrate “a time when the Kingdom is enjoying dignity and prosperity under the wise leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz.”
The National Day of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is celebrated on September 23 to commemorate the unification of the kingdom after a battle spearheaded by its founder and first king, King Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman al-Saud.
The OIC chief hailed Saudi Arabia’s progress and development in various domains, highlighting the kingdom’s endeavors to unify Muslims and the king’s development policies.
“Thanks to these policies, which aim to achieve prosperity for the Saudi people, the kingdom has reached a pre-eminent position at the regional and international levels,” Ihsanoglu said.
Saudi Arabia’s support for Muslims was a key part of the statement.
He said the initiatives of the king “have shown to the whole world that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is eager to always be in the vanguard of those who champion the just causes of the Muslim world and to stand sincerely and unshakably by its Muslim brothers, providing them with support and assistance with boundless generosity.”
He also spoke of the kingdom’s role as benefactor in the Arab world.
“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has made every effort to assist Islamic States going through hardships. This tendency is best illustrated by the projects launched by the Kingdom in Somalia through the Saudi National Campaign for the Relief of the Somali People. We take this opportunity to value highly the Kingdom’s support for relief efforts in Somalia and we express our sincere thanks to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques for his generous donation in favor of the victims of floods in the Republic of the Sudan.”
Saudi Arabia has notably given aid to a various Arab countries, including Syria and Egypt in recent months.
