Sasti Roti Dastarkhwan next step against poverty: Sharif

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif has said that provision of cheap meal at Sasti Roti Dastarkhwan with the cooperation of the affluent people is the next step of our struggle against hunger and poverty.

He said the target of setting up 300 Sasti Roti Dastarkhwans for providing meal to the poor throughout the province should be achieved during the next month.

Addressing the meeting regarding Sasti Roti Dastarkhwans here on Saturday, Shahbaz Sharif said the programme was the part of the Sasti Roti scheme in which well-to-do people were taking part generously. He said besides big cities, the Dastarkhwans should also be set up in small cities so that maximum number of deserving people could benefit from them. He said there was no dearth of people having spirit of service to humanity in society and they would be ready to cooperate in the welfare programme.

The CM said 98 Sasti Roti Dastarkhwan had been set up throughout the province and 50,000 people were benefiting from them. He said solid steps had been taken to remove the flaws from the Sasti Roti scheme and transparent utilisation of every penny was being ensured.

He said number of mechanical Tandoors was being increased gradually and their data was being collected.

He said, Sasti Roti Dastarkhwan were also becoming popular among people and chambers of commerce, traders and well-to-do people should be contacted for expanding its scope. He said he would personally meet the chambers of commerce and industry and traders for expanding the Dastarkhwan programme. He said joint efforts were needed for this programme.

The chief minister said the government would provide wheat flour on subsidised rates for Sasti Roti Dastarkhwan and other facilities to the affluent people for their setting up. He said that like the Sasti Roti Scheme, banners should also be displayed on Dastarkhwan, so that the common man should identify them. He directed the chief secretary to prepare decide size and design of banners in this regard.

The CM directed the food minister to visit the cities throughout the province to reviewing the Dastarkhwan whereas all MPAs should also send reports by reviewing the programme in their respective areas.

He said the programme had been started for workers, widows and resource less persons on a permanent basis.

He appreciated the services of former MPA Haji Muhammad Nawaz for taking interest in the programme and lauded the performance of the Gujranwala commissioner in this regard.

Earlier, Chief Secretary Nasir Mehmood told the meeting that the programme was being expanded gradually.

Secretary Industries Shahid Khan said the meeting that 98 Sasti Roti Dastarkhwan had been set up throughout the province, including 47 in Gujranwala and 27 in Lahore. He said concrete measures had been taken for monitoring the Sasti Roti scheme and a

website had been updated in this regard and now data was being collected about all Tandoors.

Punjab Minister for Food Nadeem Kamran Malik, Senator Pervaiz Rasheed, Members Provincial Assembly Khawaja Imran Nazir, Dr Saeed Elahi, the chief secretary, secretaries Industries, Food, Information, commissioners Lahore and Gujranwala, former MPA Haji Nawaz and other senior officials attended the meeting.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif has said that provision of clean drinking water is of utmost importance for protecting people from epidemics and the government is taking effective steps in this regard.

He stated this while presiding over a meeting at the Chief Minister Secretariat here on Saturday. The meeting reviewed the progress of installation of Water Filtration Plants Project of Federal Government in Punjab.

Shahbaz said the situation of provision of water, particularly in the rural areas, was deplorable and people were forced to drink polluted water. He said the situation of provision of water and sewage system should be improved at all costs. He said a comprehensive system should be evolved for keeping the water filtration plants functional after their installation.

Earlier, Local Government Secretary Anwaar Ahmed Khan gave a detailed briefing regarding the progress of the project of installing water filtration plants. The meeting was told that 107 water filtration plants had been installed under the project and there was a target of installing 167 filtration plants by the end of July, 2010.

Senior Adviser Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa, Provincial Minister for Local Government Sardar Dost Muhammad Khan Khosa, the chief secretary, chairman Planning & Development, secretaries of Local Government and Finance departments, project coordinator and other concerned officials attended the meeting.
