PESHAWAR: A cleanliness drive was launched at police lines and police stations across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) on Saturday.
The campaign was formally inaugurated by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ihsan Ghani at Malik Saad Shaheed Lines. He was accompanied by Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Muhammad Ali Babakhel and other officials.
It is the duty of every policeman to keep his surroundings clean. Every police officer must educate their subordinates about the importance of cleanliness in their offices, said Ghani. Cleanliness is part of our religion and also a basic health necessity, he added.
In response to a question, he said sand bags and sand walls around police stations would be removed without compromising the security of the building. Though set up to enhance security, the obstructions often result in traffic jams.
He said police stations were full of case property vehicles, adding they were trying their best to make better use of the automobiles.
Meanwhile, an effort to clean prisons is also being undertaken at central and sub-jails in K-P. The drive was kicked off by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Akhtar Ali Shah at Central Jail, Peshawar on Saturday morning.
Talking to journalists, Shah said every step will be taken to keep prisons clean and strict action will be taken against officials if their jails are found to be filthy. He said cleanliness was necessary to limit chances of diseases surfacing in congested spaces like jails, which are crammed with prisoners.
