Runaway bride returns home to new toilet in Uttar Pradesh

Wed Jun 27 2012 13:12:43 GMT-0400 (Eastern Daylight Time) by IANS
Maharajganj, June 27 (IANS) A young woman, who ran away from her in-laws’ house for its lack of toilet, returned Wednesday — to the same house with an ultra-modern toilet and a reward of Rs.2 lakh from Sulabh International. With her were two other women who too had similarly walked out from their in-laws’ houses.

Priyanka Bharti was mobbed as she arrived decked up like a bride for her ‘gauna’ ceremony to her Vishnupur Khurd village in a sports utility vehicle (SUV).

Amidst blowing of conch shells and ‘aarti’, tears rolled down her cheeks as she was ushered in by her in-laws and shown the new toilet and bathroom.

Later, she along with the two other ‘runaway brides’ - Priyanka Kumari from Siddharthanagar and Jyoti from Sant Kabeernagar - and Bindeshwar Pathak, the founder of sanitation NGO Sulabh International, took centre stage in an enclosure.
Priyanka narrated to the gathered villagers, numbering around 500, how she took the “extreme and difficult” step of walking out of her husband’s home because she was asked to defecate in the open.

“It was not possible for me to do so and so I ran away,” she told the crowd amid applause.
A Class 12 student from Maharajganj, 365 km from Lucknow, said the lack of a toilet in the house was “a big challenge” for her at the “sasural”.

She said she mustered enough courage to run away on the third night after her ‘gauna’ — the traditional induction of a bride married in childhood into her in-laws’ house.

Talking to IANS, Priyanka said ever since she ran away from Vishunpur Khurd April 13 demanding that her in-laws build a toilet to get their ‘bahu’ back, her life changed as she attracted national and international attention.
“I’m happy that by the construction of a new toilet with all modern facilities, I’m back with my husband and can live happily,” she said, as photographers jostled to take her picture with her in-laws.

Bindeshwar Pathak felicitated each of the three brides with the bank draft of Rs.2 lakh, a shawl, a saree and a rose-sandalwood garland, and said that from now on, they would “try in their own humble ways to educate women around them the need of hygiene and sanitation.”
Priyanka’s husband, Amarjeet, whom she married in 2007, said he appreciated what his wife did.
“All through these years I saw my sisters, my mother go out in the field every morning but it never occurred to me how shameful it was, until my wife stressed on it by running away,” he told IANS.

Pathak, while appreciating the efforts of the three women announced a reward of Rs.25 lakh for the Vishnupur Khurd village for being the promoters of communal harmony and taking lead in the battle against poor sanitation in the villages.
He said Sulabh would now undertake a new rural-centric drive “Sulabh-Gaon Ki Or.”

“The award will act as an inspiration,” Pathak said. He recounted that though his ancestral house in Bihar stood over several acres, it lacked a toilet, making lives of the woman folk in his family miserable.

“By revolting against non-availability of a toilet, this woman has done a revolutionary act in India where more than 660 million people still defecate in the open, leading to serious diseases,” he said.

See ...that is the problem ..not being courteous to your own kind. They can urge their poor to eat rats ...yet pakistan is a failed state. 75% of India doesnt have a toilet and the "bhabhis" are running around but they will have a BIGG defence budget.

I feel so much pain for suffering of humanity...Thank God Pakistan was created and people don't have to suffer through such misery...Joghini's (Unicorn's) response reminds me of this statement ...

It's argued that rats are a good source of nutrition

An official in the Indian state of Bihar has come up with a new idea to encourage low caste poor people to cope with food shortages - rat meat.
The Principal Secretary of the state's Welfare Department, Vijay Prakash, said that he was advancing his proposal after "much survey and ground work".
Bihar's extremely poor Musahar community are rat-eaters by tradition.
The Musahar are on the bottom strata of the caste system with the lowest literacy rate and per capita income.
Less than one percent of their 2.3 million population in Bihar is literate and 98% are landless.
Delicacy
Mr Prakash says his proposals to popularise rat meat eating are intended to uplift their social-economic condition.

People now prefer to eat rat meat instead of chicken or goat as it comes cheaper and is more tasty and healthy

"There are twin advantages of this proposal. First, we can save about half of our food grain stocks by catching and eating rats and secondly we can improve the economic condition of the Musahar community," he told the BBC.
According to Mr Prakash, about 50% of total food grain stocks in the country are eaten away by rodents.
He argues that by promoting rat eating more grain will be preserved while hunger among the Musahar community will be reduced.
He said that rat meat is not only a delicacy but a protein-enriched food, widely popular in Thailand and France.
"Rats have almost no bones and are quite rich in nutrition. People at large don't know this cuisine fact but gradually they are catching up."
However he may find it difficult to popularise such a strategy in a conservative society like Bihar and other north Indian states.
Mr Prakash says that he has recipes to make rat eating a delicacy, which he now wants to distribute to all the hotels in Bihar.
He also wants to encourage rat farming in the same way that poultry is farmed.
While eating rat meat is still stigmatised in urban areas of the country, Mr Prakash says that his research has revealed that it is a popular food item in some parts of Bihar where it is known at roadside hotels by the name of "patal-bageri".
This is not the first time that the department secretary has come out with such an innovative idea.
Earlier, he proposed to recruit eunuchs as security guards to maternity wards in hospitals.
"Yes, that proposal is in its advance stage and we'll very soon engage them in various social activities of our department," he said.
And the welfare secretary's next plan?
"I'll make snake catching popular for the economic value of its venom," he said.

You got that right. I have said it before. In 3 years I will be semi-retired and my daughters will be out of the education system. than I will adopt or sponsor a young girl from poor parents who do not have more than 3 children. I do not care weather she is Brahmin, Dalit, Hindu, Sikh, Muslim or Christian.

I will enroll her in the best schools than college than University if she is good than out side of India and I don't care how much it costs I figure its going to be well near Half a million dollars if everything works out. This would be my only contribution for the humanity I won't be doing it for god.

Not to say that your plan is not a good deed in terms of what you say ...but im just doing the math on how many toilets half a million dollars can build. Like the proverbial saying goes half a million dollars is a "**** LOAD" of money [hilar]. But i can assure you we Pakistanis stand with the Dalit and shudrs and the lower scheduled castes in providing them a pleasant relieving experience and we are going to do it for the LOVE OF GOD (bigsmile)

You think you are better in this field think again.

It was also found that the total population, approximately 50 million people (31 percent) defecate in the open, and an estimated 8 million people (5 percent) use shared toilets.

In India's villages: No toilet, no bride

October 28, 2009
|From Harmeet Shah Singh, CNN

    story.jpg

To meet its sanitation goal by 2012, India must build 112,000 toilets a day.

Most Indian mothers want their daughters to marry decent men who make a good living. Now, in parts of rural India, women have a new -- and rather unusual -- demand for matrimony: a toilet.

"No toilet, no bride," has become a rallying cry for women raising a stink about the lack of a basic amenity.

They see it as a human rights issue, especially in villages where plumbing can be nonexistent.
It was that way in Sunariyan Kalan in the northern state of Haryana. Sumitra Rathi said village women had no choice but to relieve themselves without privacy.

They would go before sunrise or hold it in until darkness fell once again to avoid being seen. Or they would walk out to the fields and endure embarrassment. They don't want their daughters to face the same indignity.

"Many of them do make serious inquiries from the families of grooms about latrines," she said.

As a member of the local council, Rathi has helped build toilets in 250 houses in Sunariyan Kalan since 1996.
Still, about five dozen homes lack covered bathrooms.

The problem is so big in India that the country would need to construct 112,000 toilets every day if it wants to meet its sanitation goal by 2012, according to the Ministry of Rural Development.

Even as India emerges as a global economic power, millions of its citizens still live in poverty. The government estimates that less than 30 percent of villagers have access to latrines, which poses serious health risks and increases the threat of deadly diseases like typhoid and malaria.

To help overcome the enormity of the sanitation challenge, the government is offering incentives to encourage villagers to build bathrooms. The poorest
of the poor in Haryana stands to receive Rs. 2,200 ($48) for each toilet they install, said P.S. Yadav, a state coordinator for the sanitation campaign.

The incentives are especially attractive to women, for whom the problem transcends health issues.
Local women, often illiterate, have taken a keen interest in bathroom construction, said Roshni Devi, the council chief in Haryana's Kothal Khurd village.

And through it, they have gained a sense of self, making the lowly toilet seat feel more like a lofty throne.

What is with the hatred of India? Do you even know if your great grand parents were also hindus and used to live in British India?

Every country has it's own issues. We already have a lot of issues facing our country and we should focus only on that.

Indian currency used to be equal after partition. Now Indian rupees is double the value of Pakistani rupee.
