Russian President Vladmir Putin has turned down Islamabads invitation to visit Pakistan and inaugurate a key pipeline project, a report carried by Indian news agency ANI said on Friday.

Providing a reason for turning down the invitation, Moscow explained that there was not enough substance in this trip, ANI news agency reported.​

The high-level visit was supposed to have seen the Russian president inaugurate the $2 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) North-South Pipeline Project from Karachi to Lahore which would have had the potential of opening a new era of strategic and political alliance between the two countries.

Last year, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had invited Putin during his meeting with a Russian delegation led by Victor P Ivanov co-chairman of the Russia-Pakistan Inter-Governmental Commission (IGC) on Economic, Trade and Scientific Cooperation at the PMs House in Islamabad.

Putin might visit Pakistan before June, said Mobin Saulat, CEO and managing director of Inter State Gas Systems (ISGS), the Pakistani company handling the project. We are 200 million people. And we provide a gateway to other South Asian countries.

I'm ready to bet my life that NS or even any of his Ministers won't know the name of Foreign Minister of Russia. NS won't even know that Russia has a Prime Minister who could be invited to save Pak from embarrassment. NS is the dumbest full-time Premier Pakistan has ever got. All he knows is how to do Umras and eat Dahi Bhally. Unfortunately he is our Foreign Minister as well. So when you will have a FM like him, you can understand how messed up Foreign Office would be. Thanks to China and Establishment who have rescued this sinking boat so far, but in long term, military is not 'diplomatic' material and China can't always veto resolutions against us, at the stake of its credibility. We need a team of 'chosen' apolitical men installed at center to serve Islamabad's interests and steer it out of tsunami , for no less than a decade and I see this coming.
