PSL a cricket, politcial and financial failure?

Cricket:

- Not a single new upcoming batsman discovered
- Same old tried and tested Pakistani failures given chances again and again - although there was hype of introducing young cricketers prior o the start of tournament
- Pakistan lost Sharjeel and Khalid thanks to the PSL. Things that make it worse i that the management was already aware of the issue and did nothing to stop these guys.
- The final was a joke. A move by the management, which results in one finalist team get significantly weaker than the other is the same as influencing the result of the game.


Political:

- Go Nawaz Go chants while Sethi was giving speech
- No world leading media house carried the return of cricket to Pakistan on it's front page. To be honest there are only few countries in the world where cricket is popular. Even in the countries like Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa; cricket is not a primary sport.
- There is absolutely no chance of international cricket returning to Pakistan in near future. It is quite evident from the fact that none of the Quetta foreign players chose to travel to Lahore. there will always be players who will consider their family and the cricket unions first before touring Pakistan. To be honest, they will be stupid to tour Pakistan for two reasons. Firstly, Pakistani administrators are incompetent and can't be trusted - Sri Lankan team was promised Presidential level security but there were only three police cars with the team when it was attacked. Secondly, the cost of security will be just too high and it will outweigh the benefit.

- Najam Sethi is lying as usual when he is giving hope to the possible World XI team tour of Pakistan in September. This is the same guy who said that he got us future series with India worth 100s of millions of dollars - never happened. He also said that the Big Three is a sound structure and the future of cricket. He misled the Pakistani people by saying that there is no way out of it. The structure is being changed presently because it was not feasible. Basically, Sethi did what ever the BCCI told him to do. Now it is proven that he lied because the ICC structure is changing once again.

-One of the political benefits of having media houses own the PSL teams is that one can sell the PSL on TV channels and the print press 24/7 as a monumental success. The owners of the teams will not allow their own platforms to criticize the league. However, fans are sold poor quality of cricket as evident from the final.


Financial:

- The PCB loaned huge amounts of money to the owners of the teams, to commence the league. This money will be returned to the PCB and any significant control the PCB would have had in the future will be eliminated. So basically the PSL benefited from the PCB's money and will kick out the PCB of any future significant earnings and control. I can see this issue getting challenged in a court of law. Needless to say, the money that PCB loaned to these private teams could have been invested in the domestic cricket structure. This will result in direct decline of national/domestic cricket in Pakistan.


- The owner of the teams are using the names of Pakistani cities and their target market is mostly the Pakistani viewers. The issue needs to be raised is that the operation was run in the UAE - what are the tax implications for the FBR? Would these entities/teams will be paying any taxes to the government of Pakistan? There are no taxes imposed by the UAE on individual and corporate income and wealth. Are all these owners getting a tax free ride?


Conclusion:

Although the owners of the teams with their 24/7 media outlets would like to portray the message that the PSL was a a great success but once the emotional hangover is done, the intelligent people of Pakistan will realize that the PSL was a failure on all three accounts of cricket, politics and finance.

To be honest Pakistan was better off spending the same money on organizing a concert with an international entertainer like Madonna or Kanye West. That would have made headlines everywhere and might have been less costly.


PS - By international entertainer I mean famous international entertainer who perform live. This does not include the likes of Ali Zafar who lip sync in the opening ceremonies of sporting events :)

Pakistanis especially Punjabis rely on emotions rather than using their brains and relying on facts

for example when 2 years ago ALtaf Hussain told that ISIS is arriving in Pakistan, nobody took him seriously, when the same stuff would have been said by lets say imran niazi then he would have generated emotional statements from all kinds of people, from journalists, to social media to civil society etc. but since it came from Altaf Hussain nobody cared

now the result was lahore blast which once again put an international ban on pakistan for further ten years

Secondly the politics of ethnicity plays a bigger role since, you only had to arrange the match at the place which suffered from two bomb blasts, you canot arrange the match else where, this shows the narrow mindedness of PCB, from this you are showing that except lahore the entire country is unsafe whereas lahore is also unsafe in the first place.

thirdly, you talk about emerging player, sarfraz won pakistan u-19 world cup ten years ago, you kept experimenting with kamran akmal because he has good parchi instead replacing him with sarfraz, you made donkeys as captains, you didnt tolerate a player from karachi leading the national team, it had to be a punjabi and more specifically, a lahori in the form of salman butt, shoaib malik, misbah and azhar ali, you cant tolerate a non punjabi player, you are not a national team to begin with.

when its time to retire misbah, you are trying to extend his already expired career by retaining as test captain instead handing over to sarfraz and not to mention you removed sarfraz from vice captaincy in tests to make a punjabi azhar ali as captain, but tht obviously failed miserably doesnt it

you waste talented players careers jut to accomodate a punjabi player

You look at stadiums in India when the IPL is going on. They are filled with Indians. Who are enjoying their time off from work and having a great time. I think to myself, why can't my countrymen get this enjoyment? Why must my countrymen be relegated to enjoying Dharnas, the never ending political talk shows? When I see my countrymen attending PSL matches, be it Dubai or Lahore; I feel heartened that we too can enjoy this. And to be honest this year's matches were much better finishes than what I've seen in IPLs or anywhere else.

I come from the cricket fraternity. I know how much money is being paid to our domestic players. they are starving.
lots of players are turning to other professions because they don't get paid on time. this will result in decline of our national cricket.

I respect your sentiments and appreciate them. However, that's what the PSL corruption is targeting at.....our emotions and sentiments.
The truth is that for a lot of us this country of ours was put on a plate and presented to us. Not all made sacrifices. It's now time to make our country. It will involve a lot of challenges - including stress and boredom. But we will have to fight the people who are looting our resources, regardless of whether they are doing it as prime ministers of the country or the owners and administrators of the PSL.

No doubt....it won't be easy.

Forget the domestic structure. It has been trying to improve since the inception of Pakistan. The PSL actually netted a profit last year. The Pakistani awaam Needs this. We need to be entertained and we have a right. Why can't we take our families for a good cricket contest like the rest of the world does? You say we are at war, I say we will always be at war because Pakistan sits inbetween India and Afghanistan. This land will NEVER know peace like other places know peace. We have to live with what we have. When life gives you lemons you make lemonade.

Can't forget the domestic structure. It is the backbone of pkistan cricket. If our national team fails - the interest in PSL will also be lost. For example, similar to IPL indians also have hockey and soccer leagues. Not many care about those leagues because national hockey and soccer teams of India are very ordinary. Same thing will happen with the IPL if the indian national cricket teams will become ordinary.

PSL did not achieve net profit last year. It's a lie. All of it's admin costs was actually absorbed by the PCB. There was a reason the whole cavalry of the PCB was seen in the stadiums of UAE. They are being paid by the PCB but they are working for the PSL.

Both you and I have the right to take our families out for entertainment but we should pay for it from our own pockets. We shouldn't not be encouraging and normalizing corruption. The money being stolen from the PCB for PSL, is the money of Pakistani people (including domestic cricketers). PCB is simply a de facto trustee.

There was a reason that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson didn't get along. Thomas was far more intelligent than Washington. He could see corruption from miles and warned people about it. He warned about the greed of bankers not their incompetence. He did not want the americans to embrace and normalize corruption.
