Post Nawaz Sharif scenario and threats to Pakistan.
Scenario that is being emerging as a result of disqualification of Nawaz Sharif reminding me of post Bhutto (1977) and post Nawaz Sharif (1999) with many similarities and few dissimilarities.
ZA Bhutto was dethroned on the pretext of irregularities in 1977 elections and as a result of NIZAM-e-MUSTAFA movement. There was a popular sentiment in favour of Islamic rule, and to appease these sentiments Zia ul Haque used his Martial law powers and imposed some shariah laws which got some mixed reaction but were largely opposed by educated class and most of those laws proved to have no relation with actual shariah law. But eventually these actions of then government proved to be successful to appease the general populace.
In 1999 another dictator dethroned another elected dictator. There were 4 continuous dismemberments of 3 governments by then Presidents on a single charge of corruption and nepotism. Nawaz Sharif was again after thrown out of PM House faced the same charges and there were general public sentiments against the corruption. Pervez Musharraf used these sentiments and his NAB then nabbed many politicians and his those actions were largely applauded. But Pervez Musharraf used this weapon as pressure tool and got politicians to favour him and ultimately, he proved himself not different from his political predecessors.
Now came the Panama papers and Imran Khan used panama papers for his political ascendency, although his mission was to rid Pakistan of corruption, nepotism and rule of law and Panama Papers gave him very effective weapon, which he used effectively to get rid of his biggest rival and real threat to his coming to power.
His ascendency to political power and possible PM ship is giving rise to same sentiments against the corruption and this time more powerful then ever. Unfortunately, it looks that again our political, military and judiciary has failed to understand real sentiments of people of Pakistan. They have resorted to same appeasing actions. They got rid of their main rival Nawaz Sharif, (although rightly as he lost all reasons to remain in power) and probably they will keep this drama of accountability for some time and when feel that every thing has come to normalcy, will resort back to their past practices.
In first two happening Martial law was the end result. In last episode knowing that Martial law was not possible, establishment used its Army and judiciary power to dethrone (yes dethrone, as all PMs proved their self a king not an elected leader) and in latest action against NS we saw another PM who was virtually powerless and was only able to save his own skin and his masters skin from NAB.
Now coming to point weather actions being taken against corrupts are real or just to appease the large population. It optics unfortunately are pointing to an eyewash again. As I said earlier people of 2018 are different and if corrupts are left alone then their there will be a popular uprising, totally against the past uprising and movements. It will be a real revolution and in the hands of mob. No one, even army would not be able to control that uprising and end result could be devastating and may not be good. To avoid this situation good people in establishment, including military, judiciary, bureaucracy, politics, business should play their role effectively to make this movement against corruption and for accountability successful and with play their role with full force.
