Just wondering, CJCSC is almost a ceremonial position, what is the point of promoting him, Or govt will give more powers to him.
And another thing came to my mind, if govt gives another term to Kiyani, CJ Iftikhar can also take one and half years extension that he lost cos of his house arrest. a petition is already in the court. (hmm)

Gen K’s time is up and he MUST understand this. He should NOT try to become the Gen Tantawi of Pakistan.
In fact, Gen K can NOT/must NOT seek another public office for at least two years -- the constitutional bar on a public servant reaching superannuation -- and if he’s offered one then he must decline it.
The politicians must also understand that NO PUBLIC SERVANT IS INDISPENSABLE. There’s some logic in giving services chiefs a tenure – don’t create an Egyptian Army of Mobarak-era in Pakistan, where the chiefs used to continue indefinitely til they could walk/talk into their 70s.
In fact, Gen K lacks credibility -- from NRO Deal, BB death, bases for drones, Abbottabad Raid to Raymond Davis, etc -- he has been at the helm since 2004 and the continued drone attacks and bomb blasts are ample evidence of his misdirected, mismanaged and failed policies. Infact, now Gen K is technically a lameduck, with less than 2 months to go, he should be attending his ‘Bara Khanas,’ and let his successor take on the baton, instead of engineering events for his extension.

Yes it is supposed to be a ceremonial post but who knows whats cooking in the background. I am sure he would not stick around and accept this post if its only ceremonial in nature.

Americans like Kiyani so Kiyani will stay or constitutionally he has already reached the age of retirement 2 yrs ago, and so his current tenure is illegal.
He has made sure Pakistan follows every Musharaf era policy (of which he was a part of) to the letter.
Incidentally Indians also like Kiyani. Did you know he has a direct line of communication to Indian PM since 2011, cutting out the bloody civilians

My understanding is that CJCSC is being upgraded via changes to NSC.
That way COAS will became much less important. Of course as a bonus the PM power on Army will also drastically decrease.
Already dissenters in Army are being sidelined before this move.

Agreed with zhohaq (#14) above. There're likely two important undercurrents:
(1.) to reshape the Pakistani Army and its top brass on the model of the Egyptian Army; there are already several parallels and people in the know would know;
(2.) to get a full handle on Pakistan's 'strategic assets' for neutralization in the future, if need be, and for that it's vital to have a yeoman as CJCSC, which is to be the lynchpin for Strategic Plans Directorate and the Nuclear Command Authority;
