PESHAWAR: Taking suo moto notice of the use of poor quality meat and substandard “Chapli Kabab” in the city and across the province, PHC Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan summoned officials of various departments and directed them to explain why they had failed to check such illegal practices that pose risk for human lives.
The officials summoned by the court included secretary and director general of the health department, director food, CCPO and director general of the livestock department. The PHC chief justice took the suo moto notice on a complaint of PHC Human Rights Directorate based on a news story in a local newspaper about the use of substandard oil, use of dead animals meat and other hazardous items in the “chapli kabab” in the city and across the province.
A division bench comprising the CJ and Justice Musarrat Hilali also issued show-cause notice to the chief secretary to explain why the secretaries and administrative officers working under his office were not fulfilling their duty to monitor adulteration in food items.
The bench observed it was unbelievable that reporters of a newspaper with limited resources could find out and investigate the illegalities, but many government departments with budget of billions of rupees were doing nothing to check and monitor these unlawful acts. The CJ observed that he had time and again asked the governments to amend the outdated and ineffective Food Ordinance 1965.
