ISLAMABAD: A Supreme Court judge on Tuesday observed that the apex courts verdict in the Panamagate case will set a precedent which will be remembered for centuries.
Our pronouncement on the Panama issue will be a law which will be endured for centuries, Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, who is part of the top courts larger bench which heard the Panamagate case, said in his remarks during the hearing of an appeal filed by the Punjab government against the Lahore High Courts order suspending the construction of the Orange Line Metro Train project.
The SC judge issued these remarks in response to a statement made by Khawaja Ahmad Hassan, the counsel for respondents civil society members who had challenged the Orange Lines construction in the LHC. In the Panama case, the bench had observed that they will give verdict which could not be objected for 20 years, Hassan said during the hearing of Orange Line case.
Meanwhile, another apex court judge, Justice Azmat Saeed Sheikh, observed that the court did not want any damage done to the heritage sites in the city. We know if we pass a wrong judgment and heartier sites are damaged then this will be burdened on us and we will carry this cross forever, Justice Sheikh said.
Earlier this month, the top court expressed its concerns about the LHCs decision to halt the construction of the Orange Line near Lahores 11 heritage sites without first getting any expert opinions on the subject.
The five-judge larger bench headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan later adjourned the hearing of the case until Wednesday.
