KARACHI: Pakistan has taken lead in the region by manufacturing globally renowned product from Toyota family, the first locally assembled true Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) ‘Fortuner’ and saving customers around Rs 4 million as they have to spend on import of the same model, Indus Motor Company (IMC) CEO Parvez Ghias said.
He said if the same model is imported from Thailand it will cost over Rs 9 million while in Pakistan the price tag is Rs 5.2 million. He said it is a big slash and shows the commitment of local Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) how they have been working day in, day out to provide benefits to its customers. He said around 2,500 units will be sold as per the current demand.
He added that although, the demand of small cars is high but customers’ budget constraint does not allow us to manufacture small cars, while giving the reason he said IMC studied three cars of Toyota and Daihatsu, but it could not find it feasible for the local assembly as it would cost over Rs 1.0 million. Pakistani customers don’t want to push their budget line upward for small cars.
He said there are also some hindrances, which have impeded the growth of local industry including sudden shift in government policies and high input cost. Moreover, import of used cars and government’s deviation from long-term policies has bent the bone of local industry.
He said it is obvious that local manufacturing not only saves the economy but also strengthens the macroeconomic indicators so he expressed hope that interim government would facilitate institutions and public for the transition of new set-up and long-term policy for the auto industry will be finalised by the new regime. He also informed that the government is planning to introduce the Automobile Industrial Policy (AIP) for 2013-2018 in place of Auto Industry Development Plan (AIDP).
“IMC adhering to its commitment to develop the local auto industry of Pakistan will continue to offer new, quality products and increase the localisation through continuous transfer of technology,” Ghias said.
He further said, “It represents one more significant step towards fulfilling IMC’s commitment towards Pakistan’s market. We value the passion and trust given to Toyota by our local customers.”
Fortuner is equipped with hi-tech safety and security features such as Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) and SRS airbags. It has been installed with seven independent seat belts with height adjustment for driver and the front passenger with seven reclining seats and ample storage space.
Fortuner’s advanced entertainment system is equipped with seven inches touch screen, built-in steering switches including six-speaker configuration and Bluetooth for hands-free calling.
The prestigious style and finesse of the Fortuner’s exterior is seamlessly carried through to the interior of the vehicle. Extravagant material, state-of-the-art amenities and elegant design bound together through precise craftsmanship, creating a spacious atmosphere to elegance and modernity for a driving experience unlike any other.
