KATHMANDU (Agencies) - A Pakistani embassy official suffered multiple wounds when he was shot by an unidentified gunman on Thursday in Nepals capital Kathmandu, police said.
Mehboob Asif, who works at the visa section of the Pakistan embassy, was injured in his stomach and hand when he was shot near the office on Thursday morning, police said. He was rushed to hospital where he was declared out of danger. Asif was hit by eight to 10 bullets while he was riding a motorcycle to work, according to police.
The gunman, who followed Asif, fired three bullet rounds and fled the scene on the victims motorbike, Kathmandu police chief Pushkar Karki told AFP.
Police said they were investigating the shooting and had no idea yet who was responsible.
A Pakistan embassy official who did not want to be named said Asif was taken to the hospital and is now out of danger. He said authorities didnt know a motive for the attack.
The Embassy of Pakistan is confident that the Government of Nepal would undertake investigations at appropriate levels to bring the criminals to justice, Pakistans Embassy said in a statement. Pakistans Ambassador to Nepal Syed Abrar Hussain told reporters after visiting Asif in hospital that he was confident that the investigating authorities would look into the matter seriously.
The police have arrested five persons in connection with the incident and have detained several others for questioning.
The shooting of the visa officer came amid a wave of attacks in Kathmandu by unidentified assailants that has fuelled concern over public security.
Last Sunday, a businessman was shot dead in the centre of the city and on Tuesday the countrys new energy minister was stabbed by two assailants just hours after he was appointed.
Police say they do not know yet who was responsible for those two attacks.
