Pakistani cinema owners are all set to to lift the self-imposed ban on Indian films.

Speaking exclusively to The Express Tribune on Saturday, Chairman Film Exhibitors Association Zoraiz Lashari confirmed that cinema owners would begin screening Indian films across Pakistan from December 19 (Monday).

Pakistani cinema owners delay lifting ban on Indian films following Quetta attack
Cinema business has been hit immensely and all stakeholders felt it was the right time to begin screening Indian films. It was always a self imposed suspension, not a ban. So Ill be releasing Freaky Ali in our cinemas and other cinema owners will follow suit, said Lashari

Meanwhile, an owner of a film distributing company, requesting anonymity, said the move was to pave way for a big release by a private media group in the country.

A big media group and film exhibitors/distributors in India are trying to release Dungal in Pakistan. They are testing public sentiments and also the governments reaction by releasing Freaky Ali at CineStar cinema, he added.

He went on to add how stakeholders in India were also being hit by the move to by the self-imposed ban. We will first test waters with these unreleased films and then begin negotiations with Indian distributors to continue the import of movies into Pakistan, he added.

CineStar has already updated its cinema schedule to include Pink and Freaky Ali but a screening has yet to be held. The self-imposed ban came after the attack on Quetta Police Training College attack which killed at least 61 security personnel.

PAKISTANI CINEMAS LIFT BAN ON BOLLYWOOD MOVIES; A SMART MOVE AT A RIGHT TIME?

Cinemas in Pakistan will start screening Indian movies from December 19. The suspension that was in place will be lifted on December 19, confirmed Nadeem Mandviwala of Atrium cinemas.

Likely to pave the way for potential money-spinner Aamir Khans Dangal and Shah Rukh Khans Raees, Pakistani theatre owners are likely to lift their self-imposed ban on Indian films today.

We lifted the suspension as a cinema guild. We took this decision because we would like to support them (Indian cinemas) and expect them to support us, said Aadil Mandviwala, Director Mandviwala Entertainment. It takes two hands to clap, it does not matter if one hand is bigger or smaller. At the end of the day, its the clapping that counts. This is the message that we want India to hear, added Aadil, Dawn reported.

The cinema owners emphasised that it was a suspension, and not a ban, and explained that local businesses are quite heavily reliant on Indian cinema. Pakistan is the third-largest contributor to Bollywood revenue. The boycott was imposed after some Indian film-makers banned Pakistani actors from working in Bollywood films. The self-imposed suspension also reported to have led to a dramatic loss of revenue.
