To understand the current crisis, we need to go back to 1965.
Fatima Jinnah vs Ayub Khan:
2 January 1965 Fatima Jinnah lost the presidential election against Ayub Khan. Entire East Pakistan, Karachi and Lahore voted for Miss Jinnah but Ayub Khan by using the US way "electoral college" declared himself the winner. It was a rigged election and entire military funds were used to rig it. Only Jang news was publishing ground situation, all other news outlets were under Establishment. The morale of the majority of Pakistanis was extremely low and people started raising slogans against the army in East Pakistan openly. Anti-army slogans and protests were started in Karachi and Dhaka.
Bengalis were against military rulers and this was the reason an assassination attempt was made on Ayub Khan in Dhaka. The establishment never trusted Bengalis again.
Operation Gibraltor:
To win the support of Pakistanis, "Operation Gibraltor" was launched. Ayub Khan immediately agreed to the plan and Pakistan launched the operation. It was the era when Pakistan was called the "Asian Tiger" and US interest was the highest in the region and they were doing everything to support Pakistan. The war achieved its goal, the Pakistan military got the support of Pakistanis. But, this war led to a severe financial crisis in Pakistan. Severe food crisis and rise in military budget led to the point where Pakistan decided to stop funds for East Pakistan (Bangladesh). Jute was the major export and the money was directed toward West Pakistan.
Operation Searchlight:
Fast forward to 1969 operation searchlight was launched by Yahya Khan against Bengalis. They were brutally killed and assassinated. Tear gas was used in anti-military protests and later straight fires. Hundred of protestors were killed in the direct shooting. The military was exhausted and wanted to transfer power to civilians. The establishment decided to conduct elections. As expected, Mujeeb Ur Rehman won the majority but the military decided not to transfer the power to him and invested money to form the Z.A Bhutto Govt. This led to the anti-Pakistan movement all over East Pakistan. Finally the worst nightmare "Fall of Dhaka"
Due to Pakistan's military attack on Indian armed forces in 1965, they did everything this time to break Pakistan. But with or without India it was bound to happen. Thousands were killed by the Pakistan military. In Pakistan, the media was not allowed to give coverage
Do not learn any lesson:
May Allah protect Pakistan from these evils, but unfortunately it is happening again. The military is the most unpopular institution at this moment. The majority of Pakistanis hate them. Balochis are fighting their war of freedom, majority of Punjabis and Karachites are feeling betrayed like 1971 Bengalis. The economic situation is worst, but what is alarming is that the military is in peace and happiness and PDM is enjoying as they see them winning the next election (same in 1971, Dhaka was falling but Establishment was having parties and PPP-Z.A Bhutto along with a few parties was happy because after the breaking with East Pakistan they could form a Government easily and rule without any opposition)
