ANKARA - Pakistan and Turkey are expected to expand their cooperation in defence production and Prime Nawaz Sharif will discuss the possibility of joint production of fighter helicopters with his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan.
Soon after his arrival in Ankara on a three-day official visit to Turkey, Premier Nawaz would undertake a visit to Turkish Aerospace Industries to witness demonstration of T-129 Advance Attack and Tactical Reconnaissance Helicopters.
If an understanding is reached, an MoU would be signed and later a high-ranking team of Pakistan Air Force comprising experts from Kamra Re-build Factory would undertake a visit to Ankara to look into the technical details involved in joint production of these helicopters.
Pakistan and Turkey are already cooperating in different fields of defence production and training of each others’ military personnel. But, Pakistan desperately needs such helicopters to enhance its capability to carry out operations in Fata region to target terrorist hideouts.
T-129 is the result of the integration of nationally developed avionics and weapon systems by Turkey on to the combat proven Agusta Westland A-129 airframe, with upgraded engines, transmission and rotor blades. This helicopter is designed to meet the demanding requirements of armed forces. Optimised for “hot & high” environments and having considerable fire-power, T-129 is the most efficient Attack Helicopter in its class.
T-129 in fact has two versions. T-129A is the “combat support” version capable of carrying 500 ea 20mm gun rounds and up to 76 guided or unguided 2.75” rockets. T-129B is the “multi-role” version equipped with the leading edge electronic warfare systems and capable to carry a payload of 8 anti-tank missiles, 12 guided 2.75” rockets, 2 air-to-air missiles and 500 rounds, simultaneously.

I am surprised that Pakistan Air Force has no helicopter and others means of targeting lightly armed people and and destroying civilian houses made from Mud with almost zero air defence capability

Also the article talks about joint production these helicopters which will need several years and then saying Pakistan need them to target terrorist hideout which implies its not about joint production of the helis but rather a purchasing.

I am smelling
commission just like the one Zardari got for Purchasing Agosta Submarines.

Its a good move. Joint production is always good than always buying it. It will improve pakistan Army skills.

T-129 Helicopter is basically Agusta Westland TAI helicopter. Its fully licensed to Turkey under Tech transfer / production categories.

Pakistan has been looking into this option for the past few years, but budgets have always been the main problem. Pak Army's Cobra-H series have become obsolete and are just not enough to fulfil armed forces demands. US, of course will never supply Pakistan with attack helis, but will keep using our forces on demand.

India on the other hand have developed Indian Light Combat Helicopter (HCL). Developing a heli, required totally different set of skills, which are more demanding that that of aircraft design, which we yet lack.

Other helicopters Pakistan are considering: Eurocopter Tiger, WZ-10, even MI-35 option was on the table (the only attack heli with troops carrying capability).

Good Luck Pak Armed Forces, I hope you try to get into some real job, other than renting yourself out and giving helping hand in rigging elections.............

good things must be acknowledge , i wonder why did the cancel the demo that was planned for nawaz sharif. but its good to have joint production capabilities of diversified nature and not only with china but other nations as well.

China did offer WZ-10 and WZ-19 but Chinese technology is much inferior to European. It would be a good move for Pakistan to invest in Turkish attack Helicopter- T129-ATAK in the long run, even better if Pakistan can manufacture some parts of this Helicopter @ Kamra.

Transfer of Technology for 15 copters? - Please get real my brother.

Besides Turkey doesn't own all technology patents for T-129.

Due to financial restraints, It will be difficult to place a big order. I think initial purchase will be 11-12 T129 attack helicopters, delivery date will be around 2015-2016.
