LAHORE – Waseem Mir alias Tipna, an underworld don, has told the police that Zubair Gul, who allegedly looks after the affairs of a leading Pakistani political party in the UK, is behind the recent gun attack on him that wounded him and killed his guard. “Gul planned the attack in London by hiring a sharp-shooter, Khalid Mayo, to eliminate me,” alleges Tipna, who narrowly survived the October 9 attempt on his life in the Garhi Shahu police precincts, though a bullet hit him in the shoulder.
According to doctors,Tipna is out of danger and has since been discharged from the hospital.Tipna spoke to TheNation at a secret location in the Walled City. This was his first interaction with the media after being shot at and wounded. “I have left the underworld but the Gul group is not allowing me to live peacefully,” Tipna said with a pistol next to him and several gunmen guarding his hideout, which is being frequented by gangsters visiting to inquire after him.
Sources in the underworld confided that Gul andTipna, once friends, had fallen apart after the former started feeling insecure because of the latter’s political connections.“In 1989, the Samanabad police arrested Babar Butt, Gul and Tipna in a murder case after they were nominated in an FIR. Butt was killed in a police encounter in Karachi, while Gul and Tipna fled abroad after securing bail.
The gulf between the two started to widen, so much so that Gul introduced another gangster, Abdullah Mir, to counter Tipna. In the mid-1980s, as a student of the Science College Wahdat Road, Mir formed the Black Eagles group and emerged on the crime scene,’ they informed. At least eight people, allegedly led by Khalid Mayo and a bother of Gul, sprayed Tipna’s car with bullets in the Garhi Shahu area on October 9 and fled away.
The police have registered a case, but against unidentified people. “According to the law, the police are bound to include the names of suspected attackers and planners in the FIR as per the statement of the victims,” a police investigator agreed.
“Gul masterminded the attack and Mayo, who was also identified by my guards, executed it,” Tipna insisted. He alleged that Gul patronised many gangsters, including Abid Boxer, Abdullah Mir, Kala Dai Wala and Mir Iqbal. “My personal record is clean, as the entire Walled City knows. I am not a criminal though I have disputes with many criminals,” he stressed.
Tipna’s guards told this scribe that his opponents resorted to aerial firing after the local TV channels flashed the news of his death. “We have identified all the attackers, as well as the car used by them; and all roads lead to Gul,” insisted Tipna, adding that a high-level police team should be constituted to probe into the attack. “Otherwise, the situation may go out of control in the town,” he warned.
Khalid Mayo went underground afterTipna survived the attack. Police sources revealed that Gul had left for the UK and they were unable to interrogate him. Tipna also requested the Punjab chief minister to order an independent inquiry into the case.
