It was disheartening to read a news report saying controversy has cropped up in the reform committee about holding the KP Local bodies elections on direct voting or indirect voting basis. Indirect voting is the other name of a corrupt practice. Even in PTI intra-party elections, horse trading and vote selling exposed the weakness of an indirect election. PTI's game changing reform in the LBs would be direct elections at all tiers, which is even more important than the village council concept, because village council is merely a smaller UC, but direct voting changes the very paradigm of elections. Hope PTI brings the change. The suggestion is to hold the elections for the councillors, and chairmen tehsils and districts on the same day in the same go.

The advantage of having the elections of councillors and chairmen District and Tehsil council on same day would be that councillor candidates who would be in multitudes will bring voters to the polling stations and thus the turn out for the Tehsil and District council chairmen elections would increase tremendously, compared to what would happen if the later were held separately. Participation is the sole spirit of elections. Also a non refundable fee of Rs one lac should be charged from candidates for District Council chairmen, Fifty thousand from Tehsil council Chairmen and Rs ten thousand from councillor candidates. This will eliminate rubbish in that many non serious candidates put up their names just to see themselves in the list, because the entry fees is so low. They cause nuisance for the conductors and spoil the sanctity of elections.
