PTI By-Elections performance in KPK:
NO, PTI doesn’t lost by-elections, infect it has won and even came with better results this time around. Let us analyze these results.
In KPK, all the attention has been diverted to NA-1 by media not sure deliberately or not yet it seems other constituencies were taken as less important. Three national assembly constituencies were vacated by PTI while 2 were vacated by JUI-F in KPK . NA-1 has been lost by PTI comprehensively and much has been talked about it but no one mentioned other three where by-elections were held. Lets have a look on other constituencies as well.
In NA-5 (Nowshehra) PTI won comprehensively, results are held due to re-poll on 9 women polling stations but presumably these will be mere reflection of gents polling stations of same area. Similarly NA -13 Swabi has also been grasped by PTI easily, JUIF and ANP put their joint candidates on both these two seats as well. But most importantly one aspect which has been neglected so far by many analysts is PTI is on the verge of winnng NA-27 with roughly 6k lead and 9 women polling stations are going to be re-polled.
This is extremely important to understand that this constituency of NA-27 lies in Lucky Marwat and is vacated by JUI-F chief Maulana Fazal ur Rehman. In May general elections, PTI’s performance in Southern districts was no less than pathetic despite its tsunami in KPK. Downwards Kohat division where PTI won all 3 NA seats, all 4 constituencies of NA-24-25-26-27 were won by JUI, and PTI doesn’t even come distant second. So a victory in this part and a very strong position in NA-25 Tank (Polls deferred for few days) means PTI is now a force to reckon with in South also after its domination in Peshawar Valley and Malakand division.
PTI contested on only 2 Provincial assembly seats out of 4 while it supported independents on 2 of them. The two it contested directly were vacated by two former Chief Ministers of JUIF and ANP respectively and PTI came extremely close in both these two constituencies and improved its vote bank by many folds. Remaining 2 constituencies won by independents were supported by PTI so its electoral performance improved by miles .
Now let us see what has happened in NA-1 when PTI has done wonders in other constituencies of the province. Had PTI been on the verge of losing its popularity other results of Peshawar valley and southern districts doesn’t justify this logic. Yes all other parties were united in NA-1 and a lot of money was poured in and Ghulam Ahmed Bilour was an old stalwart but all these factors doesn’t means that Ghulam Bilour’s votes increased as compared to May elections.
The only thing is that PTI voters don’t turn to vote for the candidate, enough propaganda of his afghan ancestry was made as well. But to me it still doesn’t satisfy the logic that how come a party against which votes has not been increased and it has dominated all other constituencies of the province can lose in only 1 constituency.
I can gather only one logic and it is that people of Peshawar loved Imran Khan and they gave him unprecedented votes in General election. But they felt betrayed that having given such a handsome mandate Khan left their constituency and as a reaction they never turned to vote for his nominee. I am damn sure even if Khan himself contests this constituency again even tomorrow people will come up to vote for him. They loved him and in Love everything is fair to show your value to your beloved. Hence, Peshawarites shown Khan they doesn’t liked his vacation of their constituency and I am sure message is loud and clear.
Moreover, one more thing which is very satisfying that PTI government in the province never used traditional governmental machinery to influence voters and the system to get electoral advantage. This is all very good for PTI and the province as well. Furthermore, lost in NA-1 should make it more obvious for PTI that their performance for better governance is a must to be a real political player in the province.
