rawalpindi - The wholesalers and shopkeepers have increased prices of fresh milk and yogurt up to Rs 10 per litre/kilogram in various parts of the city.
Unfortunately, the City District Government Rawalpindi (CDGR) and its brigade of assistant commissioners and price magistrates are not taking any action against the milkmen who are fleecing the consumers. The CDGR a few days ago issued fixed price list of milk and yogurt at the rate of Rs 70 per litre and Rs 80 per kg respectively after the government reduced prices of oil products.
Instead of obeying the official price list, the shopkeepers have increased prices and many of them are selling milk at Rs 100 per litre and yogurt against Rs 110 per kg, thus exposing lose grip of CDGR over looting mafia.
According to a survey conducted by The Nation yesterday, the milk is being sold at Rs 100 per litre and yogurt is available at Rs 110 per kg in the areas of Tench Bhatta, Chungi Number 22, Bakra Mandi, Dhoke Syedan, Baraf Khana Chowk, Misrial Road, Dheri Hassanabad, Adaila Road, Chungi Number 20, Ali Town, Munawar Colony, Hill View Lane, Kehkashan Colony and Gulshanabad.
The consumers protested the criminal silence of CDGR and demanded chief minister Punjab to take personal notice of the looting spree launched by milkmen owing to negligence of CDGR.
“The shopkeepers know that no authority will question them why they have surged prices of milk and yogurt,” said Asma Bibi, a housewife living at Tench Bhatta area. She said that the CDGR decreased the prices of the commodities after cut in oil prices but the shopkeepers have started selling milk at Rs 100 per litre against its old price of Rs 90 and yogurt is being sold at Rs 110 instead of its previous rate i.e. Rs 100.
Azad Khan, a government officer, said that the prices of milk and yogurt have already been fixed at Rs 70 and Rs 80 respectively but no shopkeeper or milkman is following the rate list.
Strongly condemning the move, a large number of consumers at Adaila Road said that vendors and milkmen are looting the poor consumers but no authority is visiting the markets to check the prices lists. They said that prices of all edibles and kitchen items should have been decreased after a considerable slash in petroleum prices.
No official from CDGR was available for comments on the ongoing looting spree.
