New amendment proposes CJs impeachment by Senate

KARACHI: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) is making preparations to table an amendment to the Constitution for the impeachment of the chief justice, writes Nazeer Leghari.

The proposed constitutional amendment draft consists of four paragraphs and four sections; sections 3 and 4 of the proposed amendment are related to the impeachment of the chief justice. Its Section 3 says the Senate with two-thirds majority can impeach the chief justice.

It is worth mentioning here that the Philippines Senate impeached Chief Justice Renato Corona, who was accused of concealing assets worth $2.4 million. The impeachment trial of the Philippines chief justice continued for four months and was shown live on television.

Section 4 of the proposed constitutional amendment says the impeachment process will start with a resolution, which would be required to have the signatures of at least half the members of the Senate. The proposal says the chief justice could be declared disqualified after the impeachment trial.

Sections 1 and 2 of the proposed amendment are related to the Supreme Judicial Council. Section 1 says only one senior judge of the Supreme Court, except the chief justice, will be included in the Supreme Judicial Council. Section 2 says chief justices of all the four high courts will be included in the Supreme Judicial Council as its members.

PPP leader Taj Haider has prepared the draft of the proposed constitutional amendment regarding the impeachment of the chief justice and reconstitution of the Supreme Judicial Council.

I don't see any difference between these crooks who made to the parliament with the might of their money and criminal acts and a general who throws them out and apparently occupies their office with his power. For their own comfort, convenience and benefit a general calls him self the ultimate savior of the nation who liberates the nation from these looters and plunderers. And when these crooks make a comeback they tell the nation that it's them who saved this stupid nation from that vicious army general who wanted to kill them all. Now in a way they are both the same only the style of action is slightly different to manipulate and swing the favors in their directions to make it easier for themselves to do the job with utmost ease.

I have no respect for these parliamentarians who claim to be democratic and lacture this dumb sleeping nation about democracy day in day out and give their authority to one man (baba-e-crooks) to pick another crook as their head and then like a sheep herd follow that one crook as if they were made for that purpose. If thats how they help each other with pick and choose policy then what's the point in spending these billions of rupees on elections. To me they are no different then sheep and cows. If you still consider them as trustworthy and honorable then we should rather abandon the electoral process, leave them with this option of picking and choosing anyone they like and carry on with the business as usual.

Please don't lacture us about this democracy in Pakistan. These mafia don't deserve any respect. Thank God supreme court was there who kept them under some controle otherwise they would have sold every inch of that soil in the last four years. Either it's a democracy or it's not there is no such thing as in-between. If we give them this choice of selecting the model of democracy for us which suites them then I think we should perhaps move in a zoo to enjoy slightly better lifestyle and may be librate ourselves from all the miseries of being alive.
