Nepal calls off diplomatic ties with India accusing Indian RAW of toppling the elected Govt

Nepal-India ties are set to dip again as Prime Minister KP Olis government cancelled a scheduled visit of the countrys president to its southern neighbour and recalled its ambassador in New Delhi on Friday.

The developments come a day after the Oli government managed to retain the support of an ally, the Maoists, and survive a power struggle.

No official explanations were offered for the moves but Kathmandus establishment hinted India was somehow behind efforts to topple the government and the visit was cancelled as a snub. Indian sources see this as entirely irrational and an effort to deflect blame to external actors for internal churning.

President Bidya Bhandari was to arrive in India for a five-day visit on May 9, with a trip to the Kumbh Mela in Ujjain.

But on Friday morning, Oli and foreign minister Kamal Thapa decided to call off the trip. This followed a political crisis.

On Wednesday, Maoist chairman Prachanda had decided to walk out and form a government under his leadership. The opposition Nepali Congress backed Prachanda. But he changed his mind and stuck to the Left alliance the next day. Oli and Prachanda signed on Thursday night a new agreement that wartime cases would not be pursued against Maoists.

Olis aides alleged the initial Maoist decision was guided by the South while Prachanda has rebutted accusations that his moves had Indian support.

Sources said Nepalese ambassador Deep Upadhyay told Oli that cancelling the presidential visit would not be right at this 11th hour.

He reminded the prime minister that the Nepalese government itself had taken the initiative and sought the Indian invitation for the president. Upadhyay told Oli that since the political crisis was resolved, the visit should go ahead.

Oli was not pleased with the advice and rebuked the ambassador, who has been a Nepali Congress leader in the past.

By Friday evening, Nepals foreign ministry recalled Upadhyay, charging him with acting without the governments approval.

Indian officials believe the governments track change was driven by domestic drivers.

They see Olis latest moves as efforts to stir up ultra-nationalism again, while ignoring the remaining constitutional grievances of the Terai region.

Sources said the Indian leadership is not pleased at being dragged into Nepals internal battles and were intrigued by Kathmandus unnecessary and unprovoked signals.

Even with Bangladesh, India's issues were resolved under Hassina Wajid, who basically completely lied flat in front of the Indians.

Indian diplomacy is miserable failure incase of Nepal, however bond between Nepalese and indians are too deep and strong to overcome these political ups and downs. Pakistan is a friend but India is a family.

I am sure no ill intent between Nepal & India but it is clear the family is a quarrel at the moment, Pakistan needs to capitalize on opportunities simply.

Nepals president cancels visit to India and recalls ambassador

NEW DELHI: The Nepal government has cancelled the trip of President Bidhya Devi Bhandari to India barely 72 hours before her departure for Delhi, without giving any reason, The Indian Express said on Saturday.

Describing the move as without parallel, the paper said Kathmandu had also recalled its ambassador, Deep Kumar Upadhyay in Delhi.

“Both these acts came barely 24 hours after Prime Minister K. P. Oli defeated a move to unseat him from the post, under an initiative taken by the main opposition party, the Nepali Congress. The move was to have seen Pushpa Kamal Dahal, chairman of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoists and the second largest constituent in the cabinet, lead the new government,” the Express said.

It said the move collapsed at the last minute after Dahal entered into a fresh deal extracting promises from Mr Oli that he will withdraw all politically motivated cases pending against Maoist leaders and cadres during the decade-long insurgency dating back to 1996.

The Express said Mr Oli reportedly believes that India was behind the move to topple him. The decision to scrap president’s visit to Delhi, along with the recall of Ambassador Upadhyay, clearly indicate that Mr Oli is upset with India.
A seasoned Nepali diplomat, someone not enamoured of India and its role in Nepal, went to the extent of calling it an ‘unfriendly act’, the Express said.

Ms Bhandari who became president a week after Mr Oli, chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML), took over as the prime minister in October, belonged to the same faction of party, and apparently does not differ much in her views on India.

Her proposed visit was being viewed as a move to explore traditional cordiality in bilateral relations that suffered a series of setbacks especially after India supported the Madhesi groups anti-constitution protests and the subsequent blockade for months beginning in September, causing Nepal an acute shortage of essential goods and fuel.

Indian analysts have criticised the Modi government in Delhi for apparently pushing a tenuously neutral Nepal into the arms of China.

Mr Oli’s visit to India in February had failed to bring relations back to track, and in a visible rebound, he signed a series of agreements with China that certainly will have impact on Nepal-India relations as well, the paper said.

I think just like Pakistan Nepal should also take a stand for its rights and should instead partner with china as none of the neighbours are happy with endia ....as the napalese politicians have stated that endia used economic blockade to dictate constitution terms to Nepal....such a sorry state of affairs...
