I wouldn’t have given any weight to Ch Ghulam Hussain’s news if Nawaz Sharif had not physically attacked Supreme Court in 1998. Yes, you heard it right. Nawaz Sharif attacked Supreme Court thru MNAs and supporters in 1998, and Supreme Court judges had to save themselves by hiding.
While Pervez Musharraf had to go home after he deposed Iftikhar Ch, nothing happened to Nawaz and his government after their physical attack on Supreme Court. There was no hue n cry in (print) media by then and there was no ‘Ghaiz-o-Ghazab’ among public. In fact, while Jang was somewhat criticising Nawaz for assault on Supreme Court, Tawaif Majeed Nizami’s Nawa-e-Waqt was providing naked Support to Nawaz Sharif.
Do you know how Nawaz saved himself from Supreme Court’s wrath by then? He used an ex justice, Rafique Tarar, to bribe and divide Supreme Court, and fellow judges deposed their own CJ ( Sajjad Ali Shah). Rafique Tarar was then rewarded for his ‘services ‘ by making him President of Pakistan.
Nawaz Sharif and PMLN’s National Crimes are so heinous that one can write a whole book on that. Yet, I am unable to fathom why People of Central Punjab and Hazara Division are still in love with him. I guess it has to do, at least partly, with corrupt journalists of Central Punjab ( who dominate national discourse in media). Irony of the fate is that these Central-Punjab journalists were made corrupt by none other than Nawaz himself during 1980s and 1990s. These corrupt journalists presented Nawaz as ‘Deotaa’ in front general public.
Another possible reason is abundance of families of Indian migrants in Central Punjab ( my grand parents too migrated from India, so I myself a proud Mohajir and proud Pakistani ) who were in awe of All Quaid-e-Azam’s Muslim League, and who thought that Nawaz’s Muslim League is the continuity of Quaid’s Muslim League.
