Nawaz approves upgradation of Karachi-Peshawar railway track: HK-like status for Gwadar under study

Updated 2013-08-24 08:43:36
ISLAMABAD, Aug 23: [HI]A proposal to grant Gwadar a special status on the pattern of Hong Kong was under consideration and the government was ready to amend the law for this purpose, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif told a meeting on Friday.[/HI]
The meeting was convened to thrash out preliminary measures for turning the idea of an economic corridor from Gwadar to Kashgar (China) into a reality.
Approval was given at the meeting to a plan for upgradation of the existing railway track between Karachi and Peshawar at a cost of $2.7 billion.
Under the two-year project, signalling, communications and locomotives would be modernised, enabling trains to run at a speed of 120km per hour.
The project will shorten the travel time between Karachi and Peshawar from 27 to 17 hours.
Railways Minister Saad Rafique told the meeting that over two-thirds of rail tracks, locomotives and signalling system were obsolete and needed modernisation.
About Gwadar, the prime minister said it had a potential like that of Dubai and Singapore, vowing that he government would do all it can to make it a world-class port that attracted substantial foreign investment.
Referring to the proposed economic corridor, Nawaz Sharif said China was taking a keen interest in the project as it would benefit the entire region.
The Gwadar port would help reduce the cost and transportation time for Chinese exports from 16 days to four, Mr Sharif added.
Mr Sharif said that during his recent to China its leaders had expressed concern over the security situation in Pakistan.
The prime minister said the economic corridor project would help open up the country’s underdeveloped areas to trade and commerce. “It will link all the provinces and benefit the entire country.”
Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said the economic corridor alignment should keep in view future hydel projects like Bhasha and Dasu dams so that their designs did not need any change in future.
The chairman of the National Highway Authority said there was a proposal to build a new alignment for the Khunjrab-Gwader road to create linkages with new areas and generate economic opportunities there. He said distances would be reduced by building bridges and tunnels along the Karakoram highway.
MOTORWAYS: [HI]Mr Sharif said the government was contemplating handing over motorways to the private sector, estimating that the move would generate Rs250 billion annually and help fund construction of new roads.[/HI]
The prime minister told the ministries concerned to work out ways and means to link all motorways with highways to improve connectivity.
The network could later be expanded to include the proposed motorways.
Mr Sharif reiterated his government’s resolve to revive the energy sector, improve law and order and eliminate extremism to put the country back on the road to progress.
The prime minister said the airport being constructed near Fatehjang had design faults and, therefore, a new one near Rawat was needed. It would be linked with Islamabad and Rawalpindi through train links and an expressway.
ISLAMABAD-HARIPUR TUNNEL:
A proposed tunnel through the Margalla hills to link Islamabad with Haripur would provide a shorter route to commuters of Gilgit-Baltistan, Mansehra and Abbottabad, Mr Sharif told the meeting.
The Islamabad expressway would be extended up to Muzaffarabad and the Lower Topa-Havellian portion would be built soon.—APP

Autonomous Gawadar is a BAD idea unless there is rule of law in the country, specially Baluchistan.

A country where thousands of containers get missing in transit from South to North
A country where 70 percent cars in one Province are smuggled one and no one asks the question
It will be impossible to control flow of duty free goods in Gawadar to mainland

Hong Kong was a success as it was an island and there was rule of law
autonomous Gawadar is a recipe for disaster for Pak exchequer,
they must think it over thousand times before signing a treaty with China..

Its in my opinion, a move to call the bluff. IT MAY open up the game plans, or it may cause a closure of the happenings. Having the authorities being handed over to Chinese would mean business..... for some of them...

He is alot beter planer but some pak enemy dosnt like pak to grow

hahaha@ a lot better planner.

Giving the motorways to International companies would mean that all the money and revenue generated by Motorway will be in their pockets on annual basis and you wiill get a few penny's there.

Goving Gawadar a status of Hong Kong and make it autonoumous will be the biggest mistake. As someone pointed eailer given the secuirty situation in Balochistan and Pakistan, it would be impossible to check the items and things coming from it. This would acyually prove to be disastorous.Moroever it would have far worst effects on Balochistan and its people if you give their land to someone or make it autonomous. To do that , first you need to give the smaller units their due share of resources that are generated within the province. Here, the center and Punjab eats up everything from other, be it gas, electricity , coal or other metals and resources.

MOTORWAYS: Mr Sharif said the government was contemplating handing over motorways to the private sector, estimating that the move would generate Rs250 billion annually and help fund construction of new roads.

Does any one even know what does this man??

It means that the taxes to travel on the motorways will also be based on the demands of these cmpanies then. For example if you currently pay 200 Rs to travel from Islamabad to Lahore via motorway, you might well have to pay 1000 Rs to do that if this thing materializes. Moroever , companies will be free to increase the rates and taxes as and what they deem necessary and the public will have to pay.

Same happened with Daewoo. Those who have been travelling on it know that five years ago, they were charging 400 Rs from Islamabad/Pindi to Lahore. In 5 years, the rates increased more than 100%. Now I think they charge 1200 Rs or something on it. ofcourse a lot of other bus companies opened their services so people had the option to swicth over to something else. But in case of Motorways, there will be no such option as you will have to pay the increased price when is demanded.

This whole trend of privatization is to make the tiny click that control Pakistan stronger and richer and to wipe out any competition or new forces that rose up against the corrupt system.

I was actually quite surprised with some apprently educated people supporting and going crazy over this idea.

You cannot even imagine what reprecussions it will have and how disastorous they will turn out to be. Hong Kong is a special case. You first have to have peace and stability in the region and then you can move forward.

Here we cannot even control karachi port trust. A report bt Shoaib Suddle indicated the disaappearence of thousands of container that went missing after reaching KPT. ofcourse we know that Babar Ghouri was the minister and that just solves the riddle that what was there in the container and where they went.

Now if we cannot even protect KPT, how on earth we are ging to scutinize what is entering or going from Gwardar when it is declared like Hong Kong. This might further add fuel to the fire of the insurgency there and it definitely will.

Regarding Motorways, let me break it down to you. They will privtize them and will obtain annual income of a few billion doolars from the companies so that right before elections they would build another Motorway and buy votes, While the leased motorways will be so expensive to traval that the general public wont even think about travlling on it. ofcourse it will not matter to patwaris and upper class since most of their income is already haram Kamai so where they were spending 200 Rs as taxes, they will spend another 400. But it will effect the rest of 75% of the masses.

the end result being people will again start using GT roads.

If the first few months are any indicators to go by, PMLN plans on making inflation and prices so f*cking high that people themselves will stop using the facilities. You look at anything from electricity to gas to GST to motorways now. They will then constrcut a few roads & metros right before the eletion and Paindoo Patakhay PMLN patwaris will go bersek shouting their arse of "Shaer Aya, Shaer Aya":lol:

I seriously see a very very glim & dark future of Pakistan nder these morons where they will cruicify completely even the middle class. Wait for 1 year and you will see what I am talking about.Thank God, I am already sitting abroad and if my fears and suspisions realize into reality ( God forbid) i know that i wont be returning back to that country in the immediate future.

Let the people there cut and eat each other. They so desperately want to do that and to turn into zombies
