ISLAMABAD: The National Database and Registration Authoritys thumb impression verification software, developed for voters verification, has helped the police recover an infant stolen two weeks ago from District Headquarters Hospital, Faisalabad, The News has learnt.
How important are the thumb impressions taken on government papers could be well judged by a recent incident where a poor rickshaw driver from Faisalabad got his baby back within a week of his theft.
Nadras thumb impression software gained importance when political parties wanted the thumb verification of voters who cast their ballots on May 11.Another key success was finding the identity of a terrorist who was shot down by guards in Islamabad on Eid day, along with his family tree. This was also traced by this software.
Rickshaw driver Basharats wife Sadaf underwent C-section on July 31, 2013 at the District Headquarters Hospital, Faisalabad. A woman, impersonating a helper, introduced herself as Shamim to Basharat and the hospital staff and helped him while dealing with the hospital staff.
When Basharats wife had delivered a baby boy, Shamim told him to arrange blood for his wife and meanwhile received the baby from the hospital staff impersonating a sister of Basharats wife. While Basharat was away and his wife was in the operation theater, Shamim escaped with the baby.
Its a practice at government hospitals that the person receiving the baby has to put his thumb impression on the receiving register.
Documents available with The News state that Sadaf w/o Basharat delivered a baby boy which was handed over to Sadafs sister Shamim bearing NIC No. 33105-5636968-7 at 7 pm on 31-07-2013. Later when Basharat could not find the lady, he lodged an FIR (622 under section 363 of PPC) with the Civil Lines Police Station, Faisalabad.
The register was sent to Nadra where the thumb impression was found out to be of one Nasreen, a resident of Dajkot, Saddar area of Faisalabad and the same was conveyed to the police on August 6.
SSP Investigations Faisalabad raided Nasreens house and recovered the baby from her house.Sajid Khan, Nadras media officer, told The News that Nadra Chairman Tariq Malik took personal interest in the incident and himself called the register from Faisalabad so that the culprit could be caught.
