ISLAMABAD: The federal government has appointed AD Khawaja as the new Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) director general.
The government has also appointed Captain (r) Babar Nawaz as the new Punjab inspector general of police (IGP). Incumbent IGP Mushtaq Ahmed Sukhera is going to retire today (Monday). Similarly an approval to appoint Amjad Saleemi as the Sindh IGP and Ameen Wains as the Balochistan IGP has also been given.
According to sources privy to the development, both the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have reached an understanding to resolve the standoff over replacing AD Khawaja as the Sindh IGP.
The Sindh government had tried to replace Khawaja with Abdul Majeed Dasti. However, the Sindh High Court had ordered Khawaja to continue working. The court had directed the Sindh government to get the provincial cabinets approval if it wanted to go ahead with removing Khawaja.
The Sindh government had then convened the cabinet meeting and approved the appointment of the new IGP. However, another petition was filed, which caused a deadlock.
Sources said that the matter was resolved during a meeting between Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.
