In a surprising move, MS Dhoni on Wednesday stepped down as Indias limited overs captain, just days before the announcement of team for ODI and T20 series against England. The BCCI put out a tweet stating the same. The board said that Dhoni will be available for selection for England series. Commenting on Dhonis sudden announcement, Rahul Johri, Chief Executive Officer of the BCCI said, On the behalf of every Indian cricket fan and the BCCI, I would like to thank MS Dhoni for his outstanding contribution as the captain of the Indian team across all formats. Under his leadership, the Indian team has touched new heights and his achievements will remain etched forever in the annals of Indian cricket.

After taking over the captaincy from Rahul Dravid, Dhoni had guided India to victory in the 2007 World T20, 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy beside powering the team to number one ranking in Test cricket. Dhoni retired from Test cricket during Indias tour to Australia in 2014 following slump in form. Virat Kohli who took over the Test captaincy after Dhonis resignation is likely to be named the skipper for limited over.

Known as Captain Cool, Dhoni made his international debut in 2004 against Bangladesh. After a string of poor scores, Dhoni made his presence felt with a brilliant century against Pakistan in Vizag. He continued his good show during Indias tour to Pakistan in 2005-6 and was later made the skipper after Indias first round exit from the ODI World Cup in 2007.

Dhoni is the most successful captain of India as the team has registered maximum win under his leadership in Tests and ODIs. He is also credited for most back-to-back wins by India in ODIs. He captained India in 199 ODIs and 72 T20Is.

Dhoni has scored over nine thousand runs in ODI at an average of 50.89 and has slammed nine centuries and 61 half centuries. He has also scored 4876 runs in 90 Test matches at an average of 38.09.
